Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Hai Chau District - the central district of Da Nang City - was one of the pioneering localities in encouraging businesses to provide restrooms for tourists, in a context where public restrooms were still scarce.
Since the beginning of April, the People's Committee of Hai Chau District has assigned the District Youth Union to take the lead, in coordination with the Youth Unions and People's Committees of the 13 wards in the central district, to survey and encourage restaurants, eateries, cafes, hotels, etc., with restrooms that meet the necessary conditions to participate in the program.
Businesses in central Da Nang City display the "Free Restroom" logo on their storefronts and in front of their restrooms so that tourists can identify and use the public restrooms.
According to Mr. Tran Kiem Khai, Commander of the Hoa Thuan Dong Ward Military Unit, Hai Chau District, within just a few days of coordinating with ward and district units, 10 establishments in Hoa Thuan Dong Ward immediately agreed to sign the commitment and affix decals with the logo "Comfort as home - Free Restroom" in front of their premises and restrooms, so that tourists can identify and use them.
"For the few business owners who are still hesitant due to inconvenience and don't fully understand the value of the model, the coordinating units will continue to promote and encourage participation, but without coercion. The goal is for all parties to feel truly comfortable participating, ensuring the model's effectiveness is sustainable and long-lasting," said Mr. Tran Kiem Khai.
The Military Command of Hoa Thuan Dong Ward, in coordination with the Youth Union, conducted a campaign to encourage a coffee shop to participate in the Comfort as Home program.
According to Nguyen Thanh Phong, Secretary of the Hai Chau District Youth Union, after half a month of implementation, 215 out of 500 establishments have agreed to participate in the program immediately. The remaining units are waiting for approval from their owners (who are not located in Da Nang) before responding.
"To ensure that the public restrooms of businesses participating in the social program truly provide tourists with a 'comfortable, home-like' experience, the District Youth Union, in coordination with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the Hai Chau District People's Committee, surveyed and selected restrooms that met the necessary infrastructure and were convenient to participate in the program," said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong.
