Three days after the flash flood, teachers from Mo Vang Kindergarten were able to enter Khe Long 2 school to deal with the consequences.
The road from the main school to Khe Long 2 school is about 15km long, but due to landslides and floods, motorbikes can only go about 5km. The rest of the way, the teachers have to walk through landslides, taking nearly 3 hours to get there.
"In front of us was a school submerged in rocks and trees 2-3 meters thick. The classroom walls were broken by rocks and soil, almost reaching the roof. All school supplies and equipment were buried and swept away, rocks and soil were scattered everywhere," Ms. Vu Thi Tuoi, the school's vice principal, choked up as she told Tuoi Tre Online.
According to Ms. Tuoi, Khe Long 2 school has one classroom, one office room and one kitchen. On the afternoon of September 29, when 42 children had just finished school, only two teachers were left to clean up when the flood came. Hearing people shouting, the teachers only had time to run away.
"Although they were lucky to escape, the two girls witnessed the scene of rocks and floodwaters pouring down, destroying the school.
After the flash flood, not only was mud and trees scattered, but the stream also changed its course through the school yard. Near the school, two houses were also swept away, leaving no trace of their existence," Ms. Tuoi shared, adding that the amount of rock and soil that flooded the school was so large that it was very difficult to clean up and fix.
Therefore, the school is developing a plan and asking for guidance from local authorities to bring children back to school soon as well as find a new school location.
"In the immediate future, the school hopes to be supported with school supplies and equipment so that the children can return to school as soon as possible.
At the same time, the school hopes to receive attention from authorities at all levels and kind-hearted people, so that teachers and students here will soon have a new, safe school," Ms. Tuoi added.
Statistics as of noon on October 1 showed that Lao Cai province had 12 flooded schools, 27 school slopes collapsed, and many teaching equipment (books, desks, chairs, computers, projectors, printers, photocopiers, etc.) were flooded and damaged.
