This news comes as a shock because coach Ten Hag was only appointed at the beginning of July. He was expected to maintain stability for Leverkusen after coach Xabi Alonso moved to Real Madrid.
On the afternoon of September 1st (Vietnam time), several reputable sources, including Sky Sports, the German newspaper Bild, and journalist Fabrizio Romano, confirmed that Leverkusen had decided to sack coach Ten Hag.
The decision was made after a disappointing 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen in the second round of the Bundesliga. Leverkusen led 3-1 and played with a man advantage for the last 30 minutes, but still conceded an unbelievable equalizer.
Earlier, the team also disappointed by losing 1-2 to Hoffenheim at home in the opening match of the season.
Over the past two weeks, German media outlets have consistently published negative information about Leverkusen, claiming that coach Ten Hag lacks player support and that the management is dissatisfied with his tactical approach.
However, sacking the new coach after only two rounds of matches is still puzzling, especially since Leverkusen had just undergone a major overhaul this summer.
Last season's Bundesliga runners-up parted ways with eight key players, along with many reserve players leaving on free transfers. The team lost several stars such as Wirtz, Tah, Hincapie, Frimpong, Xhaka…
Conversely, the management spent heavily to buy more than 10 new players, with the total value of transfers being around 200 million euros.
The decision to appoint Ten Hag was actually controversial, as he had been heavily criticized during his two and a half years managing Man United.
At Old Trafford, despite spending over half a billion euros on player transfers at Ten Hag's request, the team's performance declined. In October 2024, Ten Hag was sacked. Thus, he lost his job twice in less than a year.
