"I am very calm and have complete faith in the players. The club does too. If AS Roma issues an official statement, it's because we all stand together. I spoke to Zalewski and El Shaarawy, and I believe they are telling the truth. We even laughed about the allegations (of match-fixing)," coach Mourinho shared in a press conference before AS Roma's home match against Monza at the Olimpico stadium.

Italian football is rocked by a gambling scandal involving several famous players. Three players are under investigation and have admitted to gambling addiction: former AC Milan player Sandro Tonali, now playing for Newcastle; Nicolo Zaniolo, former AS Roma player, currently on loan to Aston Villa from Galatasaray; and Nicolo Fagioli of Juventus (who has already received a 7-month suspension). Tonali and Zaniolo both face suspensions of 1 to 2 years and will need treatment to overcome their gambling addiction.
Meanwhile, AS Roma also faced accusations of having players involved in gambling, specifically Zalewski and El Shaarawy. They were named by journalist Fabrizio Corona and the Dillinger News as part of a group of players who had been involved in gambling for many years.

Neither Zalewski nor El Shaarawy are on the list of those under investigation by Italian security agencies. Both AS Roma players are preparing documents to sue journalist Fabrizio Corona and the Dillinger News for defamation.
"Once again, I place my complete trust in the players, believing they have told me the truth. We have a very close relationship, allowing us to talk about everything. I'm just a little sad that the front page of some Portuguese newspapers wrote: 'Some of Mourinho's players have bet on the outcome of their team's matches.'"
This damages the image of innocent players. What happens next? That's a legal matter; we have to wait and trust the justice system. Those who have to pay for their wrongdoing will pay for it. Anyway, it's normal," added Coach Mourinho.
