Crown Prince Akishino expressed his pleasure at returning to visit Vietnam, highlighting the friendship that the two countries have cultivated for over 1,000 years.

"The Princess and I are extremely pleased to return to Vietnam on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries," Crown Prince Akishino stated at the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan, held in Hanoi today.

Crown Prince Akishino expressed his deep gratitude for the warm welcome that Vietnam extended to Emperor Naruhito, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, Empress Emerita Michiko, as well as Crown Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko during their visit to Vietnam.

The Crown Prince emphasized that the friendship between the two countries has been nurtured for over 1,000 years, stemming from trade activities and marital ties that began in the 8th century. "Japan-Vietnam exchanges have steadily developed over the years, with cooperation becoming increasingly extensive in diverse fields such as economics , agriculture, and the environment," he said.

Crown Prince Akishino said he met with the families of Japanese veterans who remained in Vietnam after World War II and joined the Viet Minh in fighting against French colonialism.

"After Vietnam gained independence, these families faced many difficulties because veterans were advised to return to Japan. However, I am deeply moved to learn that the connection and exchange have been maintained between the families of Japanese veterans in Vietnam and their families after they returned to Japan," Crown Prince Akishino added.

The Crown Prince expressed his hope that this visit would contribute to further strengthening mutual understanding and fostering friendship between the people of the two countries.

Permanent Member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee and Chairwoman of the Vietnam-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group, Truong Thi Mai, emphasized that the two countries have jointly cultivated a friendly and cooperative relationship based on cultural similarities, strong historical ties, and high political trust.

Ms. Truong Thi Mai expressed her confidence that the two countries will "walk hand in hand" towards the future, cooperating more closely, effectively, and sustainably.

This was the Crown Prince and Princess's first official overseas visit after the Covid-19 pandemic, and also the first visit to Vietnam by a member of the Japanese royal family in six years.

Crown Prince Akishino met with Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan today, affirming that Vietnam is a close, reliable, and supportive partner of Japan, and pledging to continue efforts to strengthen friendly cooperation between the two countries in the future.
