Global online education group 51Talk (NYSE American: COE) has just announced that Le Bao Nhi (11 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) will represent Vietnam to speak at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change COP30 taking place in Brazil.

Previously, 51Talk organized the contest "Green Talk: Speak for the Future at the United Nations" in Vietnam for students aged 6-14 with the topic "How to protect the environment, starting with yourself?", Nhi excellently won the championship.

Starting from love of nature

The selection of Vietnamese students to attend COP30 is part of a cooperation initiative between 51Talk and the United Nations to give children from different countries the opportunity to speak out about environmental issues and climate change. Since its launch, the program has seen the participation of students from China, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Thailand. This year, Vietnam is represented for the first time.

Bao Nhi is currently a 6A3 student at Cu Chinh Lan Secondary School (Binh Quoi Ward, Ho Chi Minh City). At the conference, Bao Nhi will give a speech and participate in discussions with international youth, contributing ideas for initiatives to respond to global climate change.

"I am a person who loves nature and animals very much. When I heard about an English presentation contest on the topic of environmental protection, I saw this as an opportunity to spread my love, so I decided to register to participate," Bao Nhi said.

Nhi said the competition consisted of two rounds, including an online preliminary round and a live final round. The final round was the biggest challenge for her because all the contestants were confident and had excellent English skills. However, Nhi excelled over 10 contestants and won the championship.

In her presentation on the topic "How to protect the environment, starting with yourself?", Nhi said she chose to start with the smallest things like planting flowers in her garden to make the space greener and fresher or limiting the use of plastic bottles by using personal items and recycling old items.

During the competition, Nhi impressed the judges by wearing a recycled dress that she and her daughter made together. This completely convinced Nhi.

During the final night, Nhi shared that there was a moment that made her quite nervous when the judge asked a rebuttal question in English that she could not fully understand. After a few seconds of concentration, she calmly put the question together and answered coherently, demonstrating her quick response ability and stage presence.

"It's important to always stay calm and focused so you can react quickly to answer the judges' questions," Nhi said.

Courage from small things

At the end of the competition, Nhi shared that what she cherished most was not the title but the journey with her parents. Her mother was always there, helping her prepare every little detail and making her costumes, while her father encouraged her and gave her confidence every day. Especially when she was able to speak up about environmental protection.

Due to the tight deadline, Nhi only had about a week to prepare for the exam because she was also involved in another competition. She wrote the content in Vietnamese, then the teacher helped her edit it in English, practicing pronunciation and intonation. The teacher helped Nhi feel confident and not pressured, so she could express her speech naturally, as if she were chatting with friends.

Nhi said she has been learning English since first grade. According to Nhi, the secret to speaking English better is to always be bold and accept mistakes. "If you don't dare to speak up, you will never know where you went wrong and how to fix it," Nhi affirmed.

Ms. Truong Thuy Hong Chau - Bao Nhi's mother - shared that the time her child studied was a time of both worry and emotion, because before the contest, her child studied for two contests in a row and both of them made it to the finals.

However, Nhi still had fun studying, turned on the music, sang while studying, and both mother and daughter laughed the whole time. The moment the results were announced was a moment she could never forget, both surprised and proud.

"Nhi is also a very self-disciplined girl, rarely needing to be reminded to study. Many times when I asked her why she didn't study, she smiled and said, 'I studied, Mom .' When I tested her, she knew everything," she said.

For the green planet

Currently, Bao Nhi has completed her speech, chosen a song to perform and is preparing small gifts to bring to Brazil to give to international friends. For Nhi, this is not only an opportunity to show her own abilities but also an opportunity to affirm that Vietnamese children are completely confident, brave and ready to speak up for the green planet.

Very meaningful

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong - homeroom teacher of class 6A3 at Cu Chinh Lan Secondary School - shared that when she heard that her student would represent Vietnam to speak at the COP30 Conference, she felt extremely proud. According to Ms. Huong, Bao Nhi is an active, confident student and always a role model in all class activities. As a class monitor, she is always a pioneer in school movements and actively builds lessons during class.

"This achievement is not only Bao Nhi's joy but also the pride of the teachers and the school. Having a student bring the voice of Vietnamese children to the world is very meaningful. The school will create the best conditions for Bao Nhi to prepare for her upcoming journey to Brazil," Ms. Huong shared.
