The global online education group 51Talk (NYSE American: COE) has just announced that Le Bao Nhi (11 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) will represent Vietnam and speak at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP30 in Brazil.

Previously, 51Talk organized the "Green Talk: Speak for the Future at the United Nations" competition in Vietnam for students aged 6-14 with the theme "How to protect the environment, starting with ourselves?", and Nhi excellently won first prize.

It all starts with a love of nature.

The selection of Vietnamese students to participate in COP30 is part of a collaborative initiative between 51Talk and the United Nations aimed at giving children from various countries the opportunity to speak out on environmental issues and climate change. Since its inception, the program has included students from China, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Thailand. This year marks the first time Vietnam has had a representative.

Bao Nhi is currently a student in class 6A3 at Cu Chinh Lan Secondary School (Binh Quoi Ward, Ho Chi Minh City). At the conference, Bao Nhi will give a speech and participate in discussions with international youth, contributing ideas for initiatives to address global climate change.

"I am a nature and animal lover. When I learned about an English presentation competition on the topic of environmental protection, I saw it as an opportunity to spread my love, so I decided to register," Bao Nhi said.

Nhi said the competition consisted of two rounds: an online preliminary round and a live final. She considered the final round the biggest challenge because all the contestants were confident and possessed superior English skills. However, Nhi excelled, surpassing 10 other contestants and winning first place.

In her presentation on the topic "How to protect the environment, starting with ourselves?", Nhi said she chose to start with the smallest things, such as planting flowers in her garden to make the space greener and fresher, or limiting the use of plastic bottles by using personal items and recycling old ones.

During the competition, Nhi impressed the judges by wearing a recycled dress that she and her mother had made together. This completely won her over.

During the final night, Nhi shared that there was a moment that made her quite nervous when a judge asked a challenging question in English that she didn't fully understand. After a few seconds of concentration, she calmly pieced together the question and answered coherently, demonstrating her quick reflexes and stage presence.

"It's important to always stay calm and focused so you can react quickly to answer the judges' questions," Nhi said.

Strength comes from small things.

At the end of the competition, Nhi shared that what she cherished most wasn't the title, but the journey she had with her parents. Her mother was always there, helping her prepare every little detail, even making her costumes, while her father encouraged her and instilled confidence in her every day. Especially, she was able to voice her opinions on environmental protection.

Due to time constraints, Nhi only had about a week to prepare for the exam because she was also involved in another competition. She wrote the content in Vietnamese, then received support from her teacher in editing it in English, practicing pronunciation and intonation. The teacher helped Nhi feel confident and less stressed, allowing her to deliver her speech naturally, like having a conversation with friends.

Nhi said she has been learning English since first grade. According to Nhi, the secret to speaking English better is to always be confident and accept mistakes. "If you don't dare to speak, you'll never know where you're making mistakes to correct them," Nhi asserted.

Ms. Truong Thuy Hong Chau - Bao Nhi's mother - shared that the time her daughter spent preparing for the competition was a time of both worry and emotion for her, because before the competition, her daughter had studied for two competitions and reached the finals in both.

However, Nhi was still very happy while studying. She would put on music, sing along, and the two of them would laugh all the time. The moment the results were announced was a moment she would never forget, a moment of both surprise and pride.

"Nhi is also a very self-disciplined girl, rarely needing reminders to study. Sometimes I ask her why she's not studying, and she just smiles and says, 'I've already studied, Mom .' But when I check, she really does know everything," she recounted.

For the blue planet

Currently, Bao Nhi has finalized her speech, chosen her song to perform, and is preparing small gifts to take to Brazil for her international friends. For Nhi, this is not only an opportunity to showcase her abilities but also a chance to affirm that Vietnamese children can be confident, courageous, and ready to speak up for a green planet.

Very meaningful

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, homeroom teacher of class 6A3 at Cu Chinh Lan Secondary School, shared that she felt extremely proud when she learned that her student would represent Vietnam and speak at the COP30 conference. According to Ms. Huong, Bao Nhi is a dynamic, confident student who is always exemplary in all class activities. As class leader, she always takes the lead in school movements and actively contributes to class discussions.

"This achievement is not only a joy for Bao Nhi herself, but also a shared pride for the teachers and the school. Having a student who carries the voice of Vietnamese children to the world is very meaningful. The school will create the best conditions for Bao Nhi to confidently prepare for her upcoming trip to Brazil," Ms. Huong shared.
