Hungary attracts attention with slogan “Make Europe great again”

“Make Europe great again” is the official slogan of Hungary during its upcoming rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, starting on July 1.

Budapest unveiled its new slogan and logo in a video posted on social media X/Twitter on June 18.

According to a statement from the country, which is set to take over the rotating EU presidency in the second half of this year, the cube logo presented along with the slogan “MEGA” was inspired by “Hungary’s world- famous invention, the Rubik’s Cube”, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The cube features the Hungarian flag on one side and the EU flag on the other.

Speaking to journalists on June 18, Hungary's Minister for European Union Affairs Janos Boka confirmed that among its priorities as the rotating EU presidency, Hungary will seek to expand the 27-nation bloc to include the Western Balkans, boost the EU economy , combat illegal migration and develop an agriculture that takes farmers into account.

Mr Boka also said that Hungary expects negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU to start in June, as a relevant political decision has been made.

“I think the final political decision on the negotiations with Ukraine was taken at the end of last week. This means that an intergovernmental conference with Ukraine’s participation can be held at the European Council meeting on June 27-28 and then, during the Hungarian Presidency, the negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU will proceed according to the usual procedure,” Boka said, adding that Ukraine will continue to be monitored for how it implements the requirements.

The Council of the European Union is the body that chairs the meetings of the EU countries at the Ministerial level to implement the EU development strategy outlined by the leaders of the member states. At these meetings, proposals from the European Commission (EC – the executive body of the bloc) are also discussed and approved.

Each member state holds the rotating presidency of the Council for six months. Hungary's session will begin early next month and run until the end of the year.

Hungary's slogan “Make Europe Great Again” (MEGA) is an almost exact copy of the slogan used by former US President Donald Trump: “Make America Great Again” (MAGA).

Mr Trump has repeatedly praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. In turn, Mr Orbán has repeatedly expressed his admiration for Mr Trump, who is on track to return to the White House in the US presidential election this November.

Hungary’s MEGA slogan appears to have been teased by Mr Orbán during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) he hosted in Budapest in May.

In his opening speech at the CPAC conference in Budapest, Mr Orbán endorsed Mr Trump’s re-election bid and used the MAGA slogan in his remarks, saying: “Make America great again, make Europe great again!” .
