The Israeli military claims to have attacked a military base in southern Syria that it deems a threat to Israel.

According to The Times of Israel on March 11, Israeli fighter jets carried out airstrikes on military facilities in the southern Syrian province of Daraa on March 10. This was the latest attack targeting infrastructure previously used under the regime of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it attacked facilities in southern Syria deemed a threat to Israel, with the goal of “eliminating future threats.” Reuters, citing two Syrian security sources, said there were at least six airstrikes targeting a base in the Syrian town of Jabab and eight other attacks on a former military base in the city of Izraa. Initial reports indicated no casualties.

Israel launched airstrikes on the outskirts of Damascus, Syria, in December 2024.

According to the Israeli military, its fighter jets struck radar systems and equipment used for aerial intelligence imaging. The Syrian news agency SANA confirmed airstrikes on Jabab and Ezraa.

Israeli officials have repeatedly stated they will demilitarize southern Syria, near the Israeli border, following the fall of al-Assad's regime. This move by Israel comes amid bloody fighting in Syria between forces of the interim government and those loyal to al-Assad. More than 1,000 people are believed to have died in the violence.

Syria's interim president makes a pledge of end to the massacre and revenge.

The Syrian government announced on March 10th that it had completed its "military operation" against opposition fighters. The violence was concentrated in coastal provinces, home to a large portion of Syria's Alawite minority. President al-Assad is an Alawite.

Israel criticized Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa for “acting against civilians.” Al-Sharaa dismissed Israel’s comments as “nonsense,” retaliating against Israel for its involvement in the conflict with Hamas for over a year, with estimated casualties reaching tens of thousands.
