Israel conducts "decisive operation" in the West Bank

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to conduct a "decisive operation against terrorist centers" in the West Bank following the explosion on a bus near Tel Aviv on February 20, according to AFP.

The bus explosion occurred amid a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and Israel after 16 months of conflict. Hamas on February 20 returned the bodies of what it claimed were four Israeli hostages, including a woman named Shiri Bibas and her two young sons. However, the IDF later determined that the body believed to be Shiri did not match any of the hostages held in Gaza and had not yet been identified.

Prime Minister Netanyahu yesterday accused Hamas of acting with "indescribable shamelessness" by placing the body of a Gaza woman in a coffin instead of hostage Shiri. Mr. Netanyahu said Israel would make Hamas pay for not returning Shiri's body. Meanwhile, Hamas argued yesterday that the body of hostage Shiri appeared to have been mixed with other bodies after an Israeli airstrike hit the place where she was being held, according to Reuters.
