With the defeat against Empoli and the resulting points deduction, Juventus are now one point behind sixth-placed AS Roma in the race for a spot in next season's Europa Conference League. Previously, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) appeals court ruled that Juventus should be deducted 10 points. This decision came after amending the FIGC's initial 15-point penalty against the Turin club for illegal transfer activity.
Juventus' disappointment
Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri told reporters: "Seeing ourselves lose 10 points despite the reduced penalty is still a disappointment. It's been a very tiring year." The two-time European champions spent several days in sadness after being knocked out of the Europa League semi-finals following their defeat to Sevilla earlier this week.
With two games remaining in the season, Juventus (59 points) can still catch up with fourth-placed AC Milan (64 points), who also have the final Champions League spot, when the two teams meet in Turin this weekend.
In Empoli, 36-year-old striker Francesco Caputo scored a brace for the home team, along with goals from Sebastiano Luperto and Roberto Piccoli. Federico Chiesa scored a consolation goal in the 85th minute for Juventus, who will face Udinese and AC Milan before the end of the season.
Di Maria is helpless as Juventus face the risk of not qualifying for European competition next season.
The FIGC's decision and the result at Empoli also meant that Lazio, who replaced Juventus in second place, secured their Champions League qualification for the first time since 2020 and the second time since 2007. Earlier, at the Stadio Olimpico, Nemanja Matic scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute as AS Roma drew 2-2 with Salernitana.
