Westerners call canned chicken in Hanoi a "crazy" dish.

When Canadian tourists first saw canned chicken in Hanoi , they couldn't understand how they managed to fit an entire chicken into such a small can and cook it.
Luke Martin is a food travel blogger with over 1.5 million YouTube subscribers. Earlier this year, Luke traveled to Vietnam to explore unique street food not found everywhere. While in Hanoi, the Canadian was most surprised by canned chicken stew. This nutritious and easy-to-eat dish is a favorite among many Hanoi diners, but its preparation is so unusual that Luke exclaimed, "I've never seen this kind of cooking before! It's crazy, but very creative and interesting!"

Luke told his companion, "In Canada, we have beer chicken, but it's a beer can stuffed inside a chicken's belly, not a chicken in a tiny beer can like this. How can you fit a whole chicken or pigeon in a can like that? It's crazy." He ordered two cans, one of braised black chicken and one of braised pigeon. They both tried the black chicken first; from skin to bone, everything was black. The whole chicken was braised in the can with various spices and Chinese herbs like red dates and lotus seeds...

When eating, the whole chicken was taken out of the can along with all the seasonings and broth. Tasted the broth, Luke noticed a slightly sweet and bitter flavor, with the aroma of Chinese herbs. Besides the canned chicken, he also took the time to explore other dishes such as fertilized duck eggs, West Lake shrimp cakes, pork rib porridge, rice rolls, egg coffee, etc.
