On November 4th, the Quang Ngai Provincial Police, the Management Board of Dung Quat Economic Zone and industrial parks in Quang Ngai province, the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, and the People's Procuracy of Quang Ngai province, along with other relevant agencies, inspected and examined the scene, collecting information and evidence to support the investigation of the fire and explosion that burned 9 workers at the Dung Quat shipyard, belonging to Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company Limited (DQS Company).
Police are inspecting the scene of the fire and explosion at the Dung Quat shipyard.
According to DQS Company, the accident occurred at 1:25 PM on November 3rd, when workers from the Pipeline Workshop - Ship Equipment Workshop - Manufacturing Plant were carrying out welding and cutting work at the bottom of the pump room of the MT Legend oil tanker. During the work, a fire and explosion occurred in the void tank at the bottom of the pump room, causing burns to the workers.
Authorities entered the MT Legend vessel to conduct an inspection.
Initial assessments suggest the cause may have been a leak in the oil pipeline valve into the void tank. Simultaneously, workers were carrying out work that generated sparks, causing oil vapors from the previously opened void tank to ignite and explode.
The MT Legend oil tanker, owned by Thang Long Gas Company, docked at Dung Quat port and entered the dry dock for repairs on October 30th. The ship has a tonnage of 65,000 tons, a length of 251 meters, and a width of over 43 meters.
Repairs in the area where the fire and explosion occurred have been temporarily halted. On the ship's deck, workers are continuing repairs to the MT Legend.
Workers continue to work on the deck of the MT Legend oil tanker after the fire and explosion.
As Thanh Nien newspaper reported, a fire and explosion occurred at DQS Company in the Dung Quat Economic Zone (Quang Ngai province), injuring 9 workers, including 3 with severe burns. These workers are currently receiving emergency treatment at Da Nang General Hospital.
