STOR RESISTANCE VILLAGE AND THE LEGEND OF HERO NUP

Việt NamViệt Nam02/05/2024

The Stơr resistance village, located in Tơ Tung commune, Kbang district, Gia Lai province, is about 140km from Pleiku city. This is where Hero Núp was born and raised. Growing up in the impoverished Stơr village, surrounded by the footprints of invading enemies, he could not stand idly by while his people were oppressed by the French, suffering from hunger and poverty year after year. Hero Núp gathered young people to establish a resistance village, setting up booby traps, stone snares, and poisoned arrows around the village. His courage and ingenious guerrilla tactics struck fear into the hearts of the enemy. Hero Núp's name has spread far and wide, and his life has been immortalized in literature, particularly in Nguyên Ngọc's work "The Nation Rises Up," inspiring admiration and pride in generations of Gia Lai people.
Hero Núp, also known as Sar, was born on May 2, 1914. Orphaned at the age of 10, he was forced into labor at 15, enduring brutal beatings. This led him to harbor a deep hatred for the invaders. During the two wars of resistance against French colonialism and American imperialism, Hero Núp was loved and respected by his villagers and comrades. He was a leading figure in the movement to fight the enemy and save the country in the Central Highlands. The Party and State awarded him the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces, the Ho Chi Minh Medal, and many other prestigious medals.
The village of Stơr - Hero Núp, a name both in place and in name, has today become immortal in the hearts of the Vietnamese people, and also has a powerful inspirational effect on all progressive humanity worldwide. This is a historical revolutionary resistance site of the Bahnar people in particular, and of the entire Vietnamese nation in general, recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) under Decision No. 281 QD/BT, dated March 24, 1993.
The Gia Lai Provincial Museum preserves many artifacts and documents of Hero Núp, including the slingshot that killed a Frenchman in 1941. Hero Núp used this slingshot as a weapon in his revolutionary activities, and also used it in the fight against the French at the Ka Nak outpost and in the GIM 100 battle in 1953-1954. In 1941, Hero Núp used the slingshot for the first time to kill a French officer, refuting the propaganda that the French were as strong as gods, impervious to bullets and bloodshed in the Central Highlands. This opened a new chapter in the history of the Central Highlands people's resistance against foreign invaders, instilling in them confidence in their own strength and inspiring them to rise up against foreign forces. The slingshots, arrows, spike pits, stone traps… along with unwavering faith in the Party, President Ho Chi Minh, and hatred of the enemy, were the weapons and strength of the people of Stơr village throughout the resistance against foreign invaders. Despite overcoming countless difficulties and hardships, the people of Stơr village established a resistance village, steadfastly following the call of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh throughout two resistance wars.
Furthermore, at the Gia Lai Provincial Museum, visitors can learn about many valuable images and documents about the life of Hero Núp. The artifacts of Hero Núp preserved and displayed at the Museum are vivid and valuable, educating the younger generation about patriotism, diligence, and creativity of the people of Stơr village in overcoming difficulties and hardships to protect their homeland.
Ms. Giang Kim Nam (daughter-in-law of hero Núp) donated artifacts to the Gia Lai Provincial Museum.
In 2023, the Gia Lai Provincial Museum restored the model of the "Stơr Resistance Village" within the museum grounds, next to the monument of Hero Núp, so that people in the province and tourists from all over could visit the "Stơr Resistance Village" right in Pleiku City.
