President Tsai also pledged that the Taiwanese government would promote policies to protect maritime security and borders. "The safer Taiwan is, the safer the world will be," President Tsai emphasized.

During the exercise, Taiwan's coast guard, defense forces, and police simulated a hostage situation on a ship.

According to AFP, small patrol boats surrounded the vessel holding the hostages, while a helicopter hovered overhead. Officers then attempted to board the ship "secretly" and fired, not live ammunition, at the hostage-takers wearing yellow vests.

The new military exercises are taking place amid increased military activity by mainland China around Taiwan. In April, China conducted exercises to blockade Taiwan in response to US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen in California.

Furthermore, Beijing has also intensified its efforts to attract Taiwan's diplomatic allies since Tsai Ing-wen took office in 2016. In March 2023, Honduras established official relations with China, becoming the latest country in a series of nations to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

The US has affirmed it will provide $500 million in aid to Taiwan despite warnings from China.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro arrived in Shanghai on June 9th for her first visit since Honduras established diplomatic relations with China. According to Xinhua News Agency today, President Castro stated that Honduras will strengthen cooperation with Shanghai and actively participate in the China International Import Expo, to be held in November.
