The Ministry of Home Affairs has just issued a notice on the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026 for administrative agencies, public service agencies, political organizations, socio-political organizations, enterprises and other employers to implement.

Specifically, cadres, civil servants, public employees and workers of administrative agencies, public service agencies, political organizations, socio-political organizations (hereinafter referred to as civil servants and public employees) will have the Lunar New Year holiday in 2026 as follows: 5 days off according to regulations, including 1 day before Tet and 4 days after Tet from Monday, February 16, 2026 (ie December 29, At Ty year) to Friday, February 20, 2026 (ie January 4, Binh Ngo year).

Civil servants and public employees are entitled to the following National Day holiday in 2026: 2 days off according to regulations, including September 2, 2026 and the day immediately preceding September 1, 2026.

Swap from working day Monday, August 31, 2026 Gregorian calendar to weekly day off Saturday, August 22, 2026 Gregorian calendar (off Monday, August 31, 2026 and make up on Saturday, August 22, 2026).

Ensuring service to the people during holidays and Tet

Agencies and units implementing the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026 must arrange and organize on-duty departments according to regulations and work reasonably to handle continuous work, ensuring good service to the organization and the people, in which it is important to assign officers and civil servants to be on duty to handle sudden and unexpected work that may occur during the holidays and New Year according to regulations.

Ministries, agencies and localities have specific and appropriate plans and measures to encourage units, enterprises, organizations and individuals to actively and proactively implement measures to develop production, business, economic and social activities, ensure supply and demand of goods and services, stabilize prices and markets, contribute to promoting economic growth, practice thrift, and combat waste before, during and after the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026.

Agencies and units that do not have a fixed schedule of Saturday and Sunday off every week will base on the specific program and plan of the unit to arrange a suitable schedule of off, in accordance with the provisions of law.

Employers decide to choose the option of Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026

For employees not subject to the provisions of Clause 1 of this Notice, the employer decides to choose the option for Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026 as follows:

Lunar New Year: Choose to take 1 day off at the end of the year of At Ty and the first 4 days of the year of Binh Ngo or 2 days off at the end of the year of At Ty and the first 3 days of the year of Binh Ngo or 3 days off at the end of the year of At Ty and the first 2 days of the year of Binh Ngo.

National Day: Closed on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 and choose one of two days off: Tuesday, September 1, 2026 or Thursday, September 3, 2026.

Notify employees of the Lunar New Year and National Day holiday plans for 2026 at least 30 days before implementation.

If the weekly day off coincides with a public holiday as prescribed in Clause 1, Article 112 of the Labor Code, the employee shall be entitled to take a compensatory weekly day off on the next working day as prescribed in Clause 3, Article 111 of the Labor Code.

Encourage employers to apply the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026 for employees as prescribed for civil servants and public employees; Encourage agreements that are more beneficial to employees.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh agreed to the plan to take 9 consecutive days off for the Lunar New Year.

Previously, on October 13, the Government Office issued Document No. 9859/VPCP-KGVX on Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026. Accordingly, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh agreed to the plan to have 9 consecutive days off for the Year of the Horse.

Specifically, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh agreed with the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs (in document 8764/BNV-CVL dated October 1, 2025) on the plan for Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026.

The Prime Minister assigned the Minister of Home Affairs to notify administrative agencies, public service agencies, political organizations, socio-political organizations, enterprises and workers as prescribed.

Agencies and units must arrange and organize on-duty departments according to regulations and work reasonably to continuously handle work, ensuring service to the people.

Lunar New Year holiday 2026 from February 14 to Sunday February 22 (solar calendar)

Previously, the Ministry of Home Affairs drafted a proposal for Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026 for officials, civil servants, public employees and workers in administrative agencies, public service agencies, political organizations, socio-political organizations, and enterprises, and sent an official dispatch to 13 relevant ministries and agencies for comments. Through synthesis, 100% of the ministries and agencies that sent comments agreed with the plan proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration and decision on Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026, specifically as follows:

For civil servants and public employees, Lunar New Year holiday 2026: 5 days off according to regulations, including 1 day off before Tet and 4 days after Tet.

Civil servants and public employees will have Lunar New Year holiday 2026 from Saturday, February 14, 2026 (December 27, year of the Snake) to Sunday, February 22, 2026 (January 6, year of the Horse).

National Day holiday in 2026: Closed on September 2, 2026 and the day immediately preceding September 1, 2026; Swap from working day Monday (August 31, 2026) to weekly day off Saturday (August 22, 2026).

Civil servants and public employees will have National Day holiday in 2026 from Saturday, August 29, 2026 to Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Thus, on the occasion of National Day holiday in 2026, civil servants and public employees will have 5 days off (including 2 National Day holidays as prescribed, 2 weekly days off and 1 day exchanged with a weekly day off).

Employers arrange Lunar New Year and National Day holidays for employees

For employees , based on actual conditions and holiday schedules for civil servants and public employees, employers arrange Lunar New Year and National Day holidays for employees, specifically:

Lunar New Year holiday 2026: Choose 1 last day of At Ty year and 4 first days of Binh Ngo year or 2 last days of At Ty year and 3 first days of Binh Ngo year or 3 last days of At Ty year and 2 first days of Binh Ngo year.

National Day holiday 2026: The employer decides to give employees 2 days off (September 2 and 1 day before or after).

Notify employees of the Lunar New Year and National Day holiday plans for 2026 at least 30 days before implementation.

If the weekly day off coincides with a public holiday as prescribed in Clause 1, Article 112 of the Labor Code, the employer shall arrange compensatory weekly day off for the employee on the next working day as prescribed in Clause 3, Article 111 of the Labor Code.

Encourage employers to apply the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026 for employees as the same plan for civil servants and public employees; encourage agreements that are more beneficial to employees.
