
The Japan Film Festival is one of the most important annual cultural activities of the Japan Foundation, with the mission of bringing Japanese cinema closer to the public around the world .
In Vietnam, the event has accompanied audiences for more than 17 years, introducing many outstanding works and increasingly receiving support and love from viewers.
This year, the Japanese Film Festival returns with 10 films of diverse genres, from classic masterpieces to creative contemporary works, bringing rich emotional experiences to all audiences.
The 2025 Japanese Film Festival brings to Vietnamese audiences 10 films in diverse genres such as romance, history, animation, comedy and drama.
The three romantic films introduced in this year's Film Festival are the return of a legend and new voices of cinema in 2025. That is "Love Letter", the timeless masterpiece of director Iwai Shunji, officially returned and is the opening film of the Film Festival on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its premiere. This is the first time the film has been shown on the big screen in Vietnam, with a sharp and sophisticated 4K Remaster version.
In Japan, the re-release of “Love Letter” after 30 years unexpectedly topped the box office, proving the enduring vitality of the most beloved romantic film of all time in the Land of the Rising Sun.
The remaining two films are “Petals and Memories” and “Sunset Sunrise”.
Another Japanese cinematic masterpiece that audiences, especially those who love historical films, cannot miss at this year's Film Festival is "Seven Samurai". This is a classic samurai masterpiece by the "king of Japanese cinema" Akira Kurosawa, a work over 70 years old, owning a series of prestigious international awards and having a profound influence on many generations of filmmakers around the world, from Asia to Hollywood.
The film not only brought Kurosawa's name to the pinnacle of world cinema but also became a cultural symbol and pride of Japan.
This year, the Film Festival introduces to Vietnamese audiences two excellent animated works, one full of cyberpunk, one purely emotional, which will bring a rich and different animated experience to viewers. They are “Ghost in the Shell” - a cyberpunk monument born in 1995, and “The Imaginary” - a film that takes audiences into a colorful and emotional world, a visual feast of children's imagination, gentle but profound.
This year, the Japanese comedy genre has two films with rich personalities introduced. They are “Angry Squad: The Civil Servant and the Seven Swindlers” by director Shinichiro Ueda - the “king of creativity”, and “Cells At Work!” by director Hideki Takeuchi - a unique blend of scientific knowledge and surreal humor. Notably, director Hideki Takeuchi will directly attend the Film Festival in Hanoi, interacting with the audience about the filmmaking process.
In addition, audiences attending the Film Festival will also enjoy two dramatic films full of surprises and suspense: “6 Lying Students” - the story of six students caught up in a spiral of secrets, overlapping lies and chilling truths gradually revealed, and “Showtime 7” - taking audiences into the world behind the scenes of news, where every decision creates an unexpected consequence.
Both films feature fast pacing, clever structure, and heart-stopping twists from start to finish.
The opening screening in Hanoi will feature a special guest: young actress Ho Thu Anh, who made an impressive appearance in the role of guerrilla Ba Huong in the film “Tunnels: Sun in the Dark” by director Bui Thac Chuyen.
In Hanoi, the Film Festival takes place from Friday, December 12 to Saturday, December 27 at the National Cinema Center, 87 Lang Ha.
In Hai Phong, the film will be shown from Friday, December 26 to Sunday, December 28 at Galaxy Hai Phong Cinema - 7th Floor, Nguyen Kim Supermarket, 104 Luong Khanh Thien.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the film will be shown from Friday, January 9, 2026 to Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Galaxy Nguyen Du - 116 Nguyen Du.
In Da Nang, the film will be shown from Friday, January 23, 2026 to Sunday, January 25, 2026 at Metiz, September 2 Street.
