A dramatic own goal from Nordi Mukiele in the final minutes of the match helped Liverpool hold on for a valuable point at Anfield, in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland. This was also the first draw of the Reds in all competitions this season.
Determined to avoid back-to-back home defeats for the first time since 2012, Liverpool started the game in high spirits. Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz both had dangerous chances but could not beat goalkeeper Robin Roefs. However, Sunderland gradually regained control of the game and created some notable moves, culminating in Trai Hume's long-range shot forcing Alisson to push the ball against the crossbar in the 30th minute.

The visitors continued to press before the break, with Liverpool almost conceding an own goal from Alexis Mac Allister. This meant Liverpool had gone four consecutive Premier League games without scoring in the first half, an alarming statistic since February 2023.
In the second half, coach Arne Slot brought Mohamed Salah onto the field, helping Liverpool's game improve. However, Sunderland still showed danger with Omar Alderete's header hitting the post.
The constant pressure from the visitors caused Liverpool's defense to make mistakes. In the 69th minute, Chemsdine Talbi took advantage of Virgil van Dijk's wrong pass, unleashing a powerful shot that hit the Liverpool captain and flew into the far corner, opening the score for Sunderland.
After the goal, Sunderland defended resolutely. However, their efforts could not last until the end of the match. In the 81st minute, Curtis Jones passed the ball to Wirtz who turned and shot in the penalty area. Wirtz's shot, which had gone off course, hit Mukiele and changed direction, bringing Liverpool an equalizer at 1-1.

The final minutes of the match saw Liverpool push forward in search of the decisive goal, but almost paid a heavy price when Wilson Isidor launched a quick counter-attack. Luckily for the home team, Federico Chiesa promptly got back to clear the ball right on the goal line, keeping 1 point for Liverpool.
With this draw, Sunderland regretted missing the opportunity to win their first match at Anfield since 1983, while Liverpool still have many problems to solve to regain their best form.
