Algerian state media has just announced that the country is the first customer to receive Su-57 fighter jets exported by Russia.
According to the military website The War Zone , Algerian media revealed that Algerian pilots are being trained in Russia to be able to fly fighter jets, and Algeria could receive its first export Su-57s by the end of this year.
The value of the order and the number of fighter jets delivered were not disclosed. Russia's Rosoboronexport defense corporation announced on February 10th that a foreign partner would receive Su-57 fighter jets this year. The Russian fifth-generation fighter jet was also showcased at the Indian Airshow, which began earlier this week. Russian officials have not commented on reports of exporting Su-57s to Algeria.
Will Russia's Su-57 stealth fighter jet find it difficult to 'take off' due to sanctions?
Some sources suggest Algeria may receive the first six Su-57s, but this information has not been confirmed. Meanwhile, the pace of production of this aircraft is also being questioned. The Russian Air Force received at least six Su-57s in 2022, more than ten in 2023, and only about two or three last year, according to The War Zone. Sanctions against Russia have also significantly impacted Su-57 production capacity.

The export version of the Su-57E is predicted by military experts to have some technology cut, but if this aircraft is equipped for the Algerian Air Force, it would still be a significant addition when compared to the air forces of neighboring African countries. Algeria already has Russian aircraft in its inventory such as the Su-30MKA, MiG-29, Su-24MK2, and Mi-24 and Mi-28 helicopters.
According to Russian military documents, the Su-57 is capable of flying at "twice the speed of sound" (equivalent to 2,500 km/h), has a ceiling of 20 km, and can fly nearly 3,000 km before needing to refuel, Newsweek reports.
The fighter jet is also known as an "airborne arsenal" as it can be equipped with a variety of weapons for specific purposes. The Su-57 can carry R-77M air-to-air missiles with a range of nearly 200 km, bombs, air-to-ground missiles (such as the Kh-69), or anti-ship missiles. The Su-57's weapon payload is up to 14-16 tons, more than its competitors thanks to its composite material design.
