Vietnamese athlete breaks Asian Para Games record

At the 4th Asian Para Games, Nguyen Binh An (54kg men) is one of the top hopes for the gold medal in the Vietnamese Paralympic weightlifting team, alongside Le Van Cong (49kg men), Dang Thi Linh Phuong (50kg women), and Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan (55kg women). This weightlifter, born in 1985, also holds the gold medal in the 54kg category from the 3rd Asian Para Games in 2018.

However, this year, Binh An faces intense competition from rivals, including David Degtyarev (Kazakhstan), the reigning Paralympic champion, and Yang Jinglang (China), who won a silver medal at the 2021 World Championships.

In reality, the competition for the gold medal between Binh An and his two rivals was exciting and dramatic. In the first lift, while Binh An only succeeded with 174kg, David Degtyarev and Yang Jinglang conquered 179kg and 178kg respectively. In the second lift, Binh An narrowed the gap successfully at 180kg, while David Degtyarev reached 183kg and Yang Jinglang 182kg. In the final lift, Nguyen Binh An brilliantly lifted 184kg, breaking the Asian Para Games record. However, David Degtyarev also impressively broke the Asian record with 186kg and won the gold medal, while Yang Jinglang won the silver medal with 185kg.

Sharing his feelings after his performance, Binh An said that this was the best achievement of his career and that the weightlifter himself was very surprised by the result.

Thus, with the bronze medals won by Binh An and Le Van Cong, the Vietnamese Paralympic weightlifting team has secured two bronze medals on the first official day of competition at the 4th Asian Para Games. Tomorrow, October 24th, Dang Thi Linh Phuong will compete in the women's 50kg category, and the following day, veteran weightlifter Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan will also compete in the women's 55kg category.
