The incident happened on July 24 at a 9-storey building in the capital Tashkent of Uzbekistan. Ms. Olga Leontyeva, 32 years old, a postal worker, was on duty delivering mail in this building.
The building's surveillance camera recorded Ms. Leontyeva entering the elevator on the first floor. After entering the elevator to go to the top floor, Olga Leontyeva became trapped inside when the elevator lost power.
Media reports said Ms Leontyeva allegedly tried to bang on the door to make noise and kept calling for help, but no one heard. The elevator's alarm system was also not working because of the power outage.
When Olga Leontyeva went missing for two days, her family called the police to search for her, but no one expected that Ms. Leontyeva would be stuck in the building's elevator.

Three days later (July 27), when the elevator was back in operation, the postwoman was discovered. At that time, Ms. Leontyeva had no signs of life. She was determined to have died from lack of oxygen.
Ms. Leontyeva died leaving behind a 6-year-old daughter, who is now being cared for by relatives.
According to the Tashkent Comptroller's Office, the building's elevators frequently break down, and residents and delivery people are afraid to use them. The Tashkent Prosecutor General's Office said that incidents often occur in the building.
On the day of the incident, electricity distribution and sales company Regional Power Networks said there were no technical issues reported.
A spokesman for the regional power grid said emergency shutdown records showed that the building did not lose power when Ms. Leontyeva died. The real cause of the accident was a malfunctioning elevator that cut off power.
After checking the elevator, the police said there was no notice in the elevator registered according to government regulations. Therefore, the police started investigating the case as a criminal case.
A similar incident occurred in the Italian city of Palermo on July 26, when a 61-year-old woman died after being trapped in a lift that was stuck between two floors due to a power outage, The Straits Times reported.
