Ms. NTN (43 years old, Hanoi ) discovered she had uterine fibroids during a routine health check-up at her workplace last year. She knew she had fibroids, but because she was afraid of gynecological examination and was busy with work, she did not go for a check-up.

Recently, each period she had was heavier than usual, lasting 7-10 days, with a very heavy flow during the first 4 days. Her family noticed that she was thinner and paler, but she was still subjective because she thought it was just fatigue before her period. Only when her body was exhausted, her skin was clearly yellow, her face was swollen, and she had abdominal pain during her period did she go to the Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital for a check-up.

When she entered the clinic, her face was pale, her skin yellow, and she looked exhausted. The doctor on duty at the Emergency Department immediately measured her blood pressure, took blood for testing, and administered an IV to prepare for an emergency.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Emergency Department, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, shared that the test results startled the whole team: Her hemoglobin was only 32 g/L (normal level: 120-160 g/L). This means she had lost 3/4 of the blood in her body. The doctors and midwives of the Emergency Department called together to push the stretcher to take her straight to the Intensive Care Department for an emergency blood transfusion.

Ultrasound results showed a large uterine fibroid, located deep in the uterine wall, causing each of her menstrual periods to last 7-10 days, with an abnormally large amount of blood loss, which led to severe anemia over time.

Ms. N. was transfused with a total of 5 bags of blood, equivalent to 1.5 liters. After 3 days of recovery, her health gradually improved, and the doctor performed surgery to remove the fibroid. The tumor removed was 7cm in size.

Currently, Ms. N. is stable, has a rosy complexion and has been discharged from the hospital.

Doctor Ngoc recommends that women should see a doctor soon if they have the following signs: Menstruation lasts more than 7 days or is heavier than usual; fatigue, pale skin, dizziness, anxiety; lower abdominal pain during menstruation or a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen
