US aerospace company Spike Aerospace announced it has begun taking pre-orders for its $100 million supersonic aircraft, Interesting Engineering reported on September 12.

The dream of flying faster than sound across the ocean ended in 2003 when Concorde flew its final flight. Several startups are trying to make it happen again, including Aerion and Boom Supersonic, but they’ve run into difficulties. So Spike’s announcement of reservations raises hopes that supersonic flight will become commonplace again.

Spike Aerospace's supersonic plane, the S-512, will carry 12 to 18 passengers. It combines high-speed travel with luxury, and renderings suggest it's for the wealthy in a hurry to get to their destination.

The S-512 is expected to travel at Mach 1.6 (1.6 times the speed of sound), equivalent to about 1,800 km/h. This would allow passengers to fly at least 800 km/h faster than current civilian aircraft.

Spike Aerospace hasn’t revealed much about the S-512’s technology. However, according to its website, the windowless cabin design contributes to quiet flights. Spike Aerospace believes its aircraft won’t create a sonic boom when flying at supersonic speeds. The quietness allows it to fly at high speeds even over land.

The cabin wall doubles as a high-definition screen, providing passengers with in-flight entertainment. Controlled by a smart device or a touchpad on each seat, the cabin wall can mirror a phone or tablet screen, play on-demand content, or provide a 360-degree view of the outside world.

With the S-512, Spike Aerospace claims passengers will be able to get to their destination, meet more customers, and complete transactions faster. The journey from London to New York City will take less than four hours, and with a range of around 7,000 miles, passengers could fly nonstop from New York to Dubai.
