Practical tips for self-preservation when traveling alone

Việt NamViệt Nam22/10/2023

Setting a family member's contact number as their phone's wallpaper and avoiding going out late at night are some of the rules Dan Ginn always follows when traveling alone.

Below are simple yet practical tips that travel blogger Dan Ginn has learned after 5 years of traveling the world solo. He hopes to share his experiences so that future travelers can apply them and avoid the mistakes Ginn made in the past.

Store emergency phone contacts on your phone's lock screen.

Many people often use portraits or landscapes as their phone's lock screen. But for Dan Ginn, it's a photo of his emergency contact list.

Ginn said that people around the scene will try to contact the family and friends of the person involved in the road accident. But in many cases, they can't reach them because the victim's phone is switched off. That's why you should write down the phone number on a piece of paper, take a picture of it, and use that picture as your wallpaper. That way, no matter what, people can help you contact your loved ones.

Leverage social media to your advantage.

Besides searching for information on the official websites of the local government where you're going, Dan often joins Facebook groups. He calls these groups "gold mines" on social media because their members provide the most useful information and interesting tips about places all over the world.

Ask the locals about the prices.

Like any tourist, Dan has also experienced being ripped off, such as being charged double the price for an item. When arriving in a new place, the male traveler will talk to locals to find out the prices. In addition, Dan often reads reviews on Tripadvisor or Google to help him decide which restaurants to eat at.

Always pay attention to your surroundings.

Be cautious when arriving in a new place. Traveling alone requires even more caution. Dan advises travelers against going out alone late at night. Instead, he usually takes a taxi to avoid walking back to his room late at night.

"You should also avoid burying your head in your phone while walking or being alone for too long in deserted places," Dan said.
