Technology giant Microsoft has just announced plans to invest $30 billion in the UK over four years, half of which will be used for cloud computing infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The investment is the biggest of a total of $42 billion in commitments from major US tech companies, announced as President Donald Trump arrives in the UK for a historic second state visit.

The UK and US governments have also reached an agreement to cooperate on nuclear and space technology under the “Technology Prosperity Agreement.”

Microsoft said the investment was the largest financial commitment the company had ever made in the UK.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella asserted that the corporation is committed to creating new opportunities for people and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.

He said Microsoft would invest $30 billion in the UK over four years, including designing the country's biggest supercomputer.

Mr Nadella said Microsoft currently has 6,000 employees in the UK, where the company operates data centres, AI research facilities and video game development units.

According to Stanford University's AI 2025 Index report, the UK ranked highly in private investment in AI over the past decade, but still lags far behind China and the US.

Google also just announced that it will invest 5 billion pounds ($6.8 billion) in the UK over the next two years to promote the development of AI in this country.

Britain and the US will also sign an agreement to accelerate the development of nuclear energy projects.

The deal promises to shorten approval processes and bring new private investment into nuclear projects as Britain strives to achieve zero carbon emissions and energy security./.
