Microsoft wants to build a closed ecosystem for Windows 12

To serve its purpose, Microsoft is recruiting for the positions of principal system architect for silicon chips, principal design engineer, physical design verification engineer, and principal CAD integrity manager at Silicon Power, according to TechUnwrapped . They want to create their own processing chips and improve Windows 12 compatibility.

Microsoft wants to build a closed platform like Apple

The job description suggests that these employees will be at the forefront of computing. They will work with various cross-functional teams to deliver a high-performance and innovative SoC. Clearly, Microsoft is interested in competing with Apple.

It is likely that the main reason behind this is the development of new Surface systems. Previous Surface devices used Intel processors and Microsoft wants to move to its own chips. One of the aspects that Microsoft will develop these chips for is AI (artificial intelligence) power. This capability is further enhanced with Windows 12 - a platform that focuses heavily on AI technology, where Microsoft has an advantage thanks to its large investment in OpenAI.

Given Microsoft’s goals, this is clearly something that Intel is worried about, as not only Apple, Amazon, but also Google have their own chips based on ARM. The main highlight of ARM is that it is based on RISC - a shortened instruction set, while Intel and AMD chips are based on CISC - a more complex instruction set system. This change has led Intel to aim to produce chips based on the ARM architecture.

There is very little information about Windows 12 at the moment. Rumors suggest that Microsoft will release the new operating system next year, which would make Windows 11 one of Microsoft's shortest-lived operating systems. Microsoft has recently largely stopped supporting Windows 10, with the company only adding minor improvements, optimizations, and security patches to the operating system. The majority of development will be focused on Windows 11 and its successor.
