Expanding opportunities for Vietnam educational cooperation

Recognizing thateducation is the focus of the cooperation between Vietnam and New Zealand with both breadth and depth development, the Ambassador hopes to work with the Ministry of Education and Training to find new directions and focuses in educational cooperation to upgrade the cooperative relationship to a higher level in the coming time.

Regarding specific cooperation content, the New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam expressed his wish to welcome Vietnamese officials and lecturers to study in New Zealand under the framework of Project 89 on improving the capacity of lecturers and managers of higher education institutions to meet the requirements of comprehensive fundamental innovation in education and training in the 2019-2030 period.

New Zealand is also very famous for its educational program for foreign high school students. We hope to continue to welcome more Vietnamese high school students to study in New Zealand.

“We believe that one of the conditions for high-quality education is the diversity of learners. Having New Zealand students study alongside students from Southeast Asia is one of the important factors to improve the quality of education,” Ms. Caroline Beresford shared.

Currently, New Zealand has a number of support programs for Vietnam, including: New Zealand - ASEAN Scholarship, English Language Training for Public Officials (ELTO), annual short-term scholarship programs by topic for officials to study and learn from New Zealand's experiences; New Zealand Government Scholarship program for secondary schools, Prime Minister's Scholarship program for Asia, etc.

According to Ms. Caroline Beresford, New Zealand's scholarship programs are very open, covering many fields. In particular, New Zealand currently maintains full doctoral scholarships, in which families can follow...

The Ambassador also introduced two scholarships in 2025 for Vietnamese civil servants to study for 1 month in New Zealand with the major content of public leadership.

At the reception, Minister Nguyen Kim Son thanked Ms. Caroline Beresford for her concern and sharing with the localities of Vietnam affected by storm Yagi.

Regarding educational and training cooperation between the two countries, the Minister informed: Within the framework of the official visit of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to New Zealand in March 2024, witnessed by the Prime Ministers of the two countries, the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training and the New Zealand Ministry of Higher Education, Colleges and Skills signed an educational cooperation agreement between the two governments. Currently, the Ministry of Education and Training is actively implementing the contents of this cooperation agreement.

In response to the Ambassador's proposal regarding Project 89, the Minister said that Vietnam also wishes to send candidates to study for a doctorate in New Zealand, especially in the fields of technology, new engineering, and high technology, which are in great demand in Vietnam.

In addition, a group of Vietnamese higher education institutions are actively opening training programs in high-tech fields. I hope the Ambassador will support the two countries' higher education institutions to sign bilateral agreements.

Not only higher education, Minister Nguyen Kim Son hopes to have connections from the Ambassador to further strengthen cooperation between Vietnamese and New Zealand high schools. This is very necessary in the context of Vietnam's reform of general education.

The Minister expressed his belief that during her term, Ambassador Caroline Beresford will achieve good results, contributing to more effectively promoting educational and training cooperation between the two countries.

New Zealand has only 8 universities, but they are all of high quality and reputation. Currently, 5/8 New Zealand universities have implemented cooperation programs in Vietnam; the remaining 3 universities are discussing cooperation programs. Secondary schools and technical/technological institutes are also looking for opportunities to implement some cooperation programs with Vietnamese partners.
