Moldova expels 45 Russian diplomats

VTC NewsVTC News26/07/2023

The above information was told by Mr. Igor Zakharov - media advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova to TASS on July 26. Accordingly, among the 45 Russian diplomats expelled were diplomatic officials and embassy staff.

"Forty-five diplomatic staff of the Russian Embassy in Chisinau will have to leave Moldova," Zakharov said.

Also according to the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova, Chisinau will reduce the number of Russian Embassy staff in the country to the same number of Moldovan diplomatic staff working in Moscow - about 10 diplomatic officials and 15 embassy staff.

The expelled Russian diplomats had committed unfriendly acts and destabilized Moldova's security, Mr. Zakharov added.

On the same day, Moldova's Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicolae Popescu said that the country is investigating a large number of antennas installed by Russia on its embassy in Chisinau. There are allegations that the embassy is gathering intelligence through this antenna system.

Russian Ambassador to Moldova Oleg Vasnetsov was summoned to the Moldovan Foreign Ministry headquarters on July 26 over the issue.

Speaking to the press later, Ambassador Vasnetsov said the espionage allegations were just a pretext for Moldova to reduce the number of Russian diplomatic staff in Chisinau, which was having a negative impact on the relationship between the two countries.

Last October, Moldova expelled a Russian embassy employee after an unidentified rocket landed near the Moldovan-Ukrainian border. The Russian Foreign Ministry called the move an unprovoked provocation and responded by expelling a Moldovan diplomat.
