Just the beginning
At Meta's annual general meeting of shareholders on May 28, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a notable milestone: the artificial intelligence assistant Meta AI has officially reached 1 billion monthly active users across the entire application ecosystem including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.
The figure reflects the company's incredible growth since launching its standalone Meta AI app in April 2025. However, Zuckerberg doesn't see this as a destination, but rather as the beginning of a much more ambitious strategy.
“It sounds weird to say that 1 billion monthly active users is still not a big scale for us, but it is,” Zuckerberg said, emphasizing this year’s goal of making Meta AI the world’s leading personal AI assistant, with a focus on deep personalization, voice communication, and interactive entertainment.
Despite Meta AI’s enormous scale, Zuckerberg said the company is in no rush to “commercialize” the tool. “We want to continue to develop Meta AI and improve the user experience before we build a business model around it,” he told shareholders.
Still, the monetization plans are clear. Zuckerberg hinted at potential revenue models, including inserting paid recommendations into user interactions with the AI, and a subscription service that would let users pay for additional computing power, similar to the model used by competitors like ChatGPT.
In fact, Meta has been preparing for this move since the beginning of the year. In February 2025, the company revealed that it would test a paid subscription plan for Meta AI in the second quarter. Now that the standalone app has been launched, plans to commercialize Meta AI are starting to take shape.

Meta still has a series of internal controversies
Despite its technological achievements, Meta still faces many internal issues and shareholder pressure. At the May 28 meeting, investors voted on 14 proposals, including 9 shareholder proposals related to “hot” topics such as child safety on the platform, greenhouse gas emissions, and a proposal to allow the company to hold Bitcoin as a reserve asset.
In particular, proposal number 8, put forward by JLens (affiliated with the Anti-Defamation League), requires Meta to publish an annual report on hateful and anti-Semitic content on the platform, especially after Meta relaxed its content moderation policy last January.
Still, most proposals that are not supported by Meta’s board are unlikely to pass, according to preliminary results, while proposals supported by management, such as approving a new board of directors or a stock-based compensation plan, are almost certain to pass.
Meta said the official results of the votes will be announced within four business days, on the company's website and with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Support tool or giant money printing machine?
Meta AI’s billion user base is a testament to the enormous appeal of AI in modern life. But more importantly, Meta is redefining the role of AI assistants: not just answering questions, but also understanding users, making personalized recommendations, and entertaining them all in one.
If the commercialization plan goes well, Meta could create a huge new source of revenue, especially in the context of the company's desire to reduce its dependence on traditional advertising.
Despite the many controversies and challenges in technological ethics, there is no denying that Meta is holding one of the most popular and commercially viable AI platforms in the world today.
