AP reported on November 20 that the black, double-pointed felt "bicorne" hat once worn by French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was sold for 1.932 million euros (51 billion VND) at an auction last weekend.

Despite fading and cracking due to time, the value of the memorabilia sold on November 19 broke the record of 1.884 million euros set by another hat also belonging to Emperor Napoleon in 2014.

The hat was auctioned on November 19.

The hat had a starting price of 600,000 to 800,000 euros at the start of the auction. However, the price quickly skyrocketed and only stopped until an anonymous bidder decided to pay 1.932 million euros (including commission) to own the item.

The distinctive wide black hat is one of the few accessories that still exists today. It was worn by Napoleon when he ruled 19th-century France and conquered Europe.

Napoleon is believed to have owned around 120 such hats in total, most of which are now lost, according to AFP. While other officers usually wore bicornes with the two points facing forward and back, Napoleon turned his hat parallel to his shoulders.

This style, known as "en bataille", made it easy for his troops to recognize the commander in battle.

The hat, which was auctioned on November 19, was part of the collection of French businessman Jean-Louis Noisiez, who died last year. Mr. Noisiez spent more than half a century assembling a collection of Napoleonic memorabilia, guns, swords and coins.
