On October 14, the Vietnam Blockchain Association (VBA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC Vietnam) jointly organized a training program on “Raising awareness of cyber security and preventing online fraud in the context of digital transformation” at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, aiming to improve basic skills for students to deal with high-tech crimes and threats in cyberspace.

In fact, due to lack of experience and vigilance, many students are now easy prey for high-tech criminals. Many students, because of their gullibility, have fallen into the traps of bad guys. Therefore, it is extremely necessary for students to identify some initial methods, tricks, and ways to deal with being victims of this type of crime.

According to a report by the Vietnam Blockchain Association, in 2023, the association recorded more than 69,000 complaints related to crypto-asset fraud, with losses of up to 5.6 billion USD, an increase of 45% compared to 2022. In particular, the investment fraud model (Pig Butchering) accounted for 71% of the total losses, equivalent to 3.96 billion USD. This is a sophisticated fraud model, building trust with victims through social networks or dating apps, then enticing them to invest in fake financial platforms. When the victim invests a large amount of money, the scammer will disappear with all the assets. In particular, deepfake technology is becoming a powerful support tool for criminals, convincingly impersonating identities, making victims easily deceived.

Mr. Tran Huyen Dinh, representative of Vietnam Blockchain Association shared at the event

“In May 2023, the Vietnam Blockchain Association developed the ChainTracer solution to detect, trace and analyze suspicious crypto-asset transactions. Since its launch, ChainTracer has helped recover more than 2 million USD from scams in Vietnam. ChainTracer not only helps detect fraudulent activities early but also increases transparency in transactions, contributes to protecting users and building a safer Blockchain ecosystem,” Mr. Tran Huyen Dinh, representative of the Vietnam Blockchain Association, shared with students.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Trang, representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC Vietnam), said that with sophisticated tricks, scammers apply many psychological measures to gain trust and lead according to the scenario. Currently, there are 24 common forms of fraud in cyberspace that have been announced by the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) such as: Online prize winning, impersonating tax officers, police officers , investing in digital assets, deepfake (videos impersonating faces, voices)...

In addition to technical measures, raising awareness, along with basic skills for people and students, is considered one of the leading measures to help prevent online fraud.
