Rioters in Paris tried to ram a car into the home of a mayor of a suburb of the city, setting it on fire and firing fireworks at his wife and children there.
Vincent Jeanbrun, 39, is the center-right mayor of the southern suburb of L'Hay-les-Roses. At the time, Vincent Jeanbrun was working at the town hall, while his wife Melanie and young children were asleep at home.
The attackers drove toward his house but were stopped by a low wall surrounding the property, the prosecutor said. They then set the car on fire.
As Mr. Jeanbrun’s wife and two children, aged 5 and 7, tried to escape through the backyard, the rioters attacked them with fireworks. Mr. Jeanbrun told Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne that his wife had to undergo surgery on a broken leg and spend three months in rehabilitation.
“While trying to run away from the rioters, my wife and one of my children were injured,” he said.
A local prosecutor told reporters that an investigation into attempted murder has been opened. No suspects have been arrested yet.
Mr Jeanbrun's town hall has been the subject of attack for several nights since the shooting last Tuesday and has been reinforced with barbed wire and other barriers.
After the incident, Mr. Jeanbrun visited several places in the locality and received many words of reassurance from the people. He also witnessed the remnants of the suburban market that was destroyed in the riots.
A man consoled Mayor Jeanbrun: “Hold on, Mayor. We stand with you.”
When reassured by a bystander, he said: “I didn't think we would have to go through something like this.”
“They are disgusting,” the woman commented.
