Man's esophagus reconstructed from colon segment

According to information from the hospital, the male patient had a history of treatment for stage III esophageal cancer in 2019 at Bach Mai Hospital, had undergone radical chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and had surgery to remove the esophagus, remove lymph nodes, and create an esophageal reconstruction using a gastric tube.

After many years of regular check-ups, during a recent check-up at Hospital 198, the patient was found to have a malignant lesion in the gastric tube, the location that had been used to create the previous food tract.

Pathology results confirmed that the patient had gastric tube ring cell cancer. After being transferred to Hanoi Oncology Hospital, doctors diagnosed gastric tube cancer on the basis that the patient had been treated for esophageal cancer.

To ensure complete treatment, the proposed plan is to remove the entire gastric tube, radical lymph node dissection and reconstruct the esophagus using the left colon segment.

According to Dr. Le Van Thanh - Deputy Director of Hanoi Oncology Hospital, Head of General Surgery Department, this is a complex surgical technique, requiring close coordination between teams.

"Creating a colonic feeding tract not only requires ensuring the length and good blood circulation of the graft, but also takes into account factors related to the anatomical structure that has been altered by the previous surgery.

During the surgery, doctors brought the colon up to the chest and neck to connect it to the remaining part of the esophagus, completely replacing the digestive function of the removed stomach," said Dr. Thanh.

After surgery, the patient recovered well and was discharged after 8 days of inpatient treatment.
