There are still more than 60 days until the Lunar New Year. However, in many apricot blossom gardens in Ham Hiep commune (Ham Thuan Bac district, Binh Thuan province), the apricot blossoms are already blooming profusely, with almost every tree in the garden in full bloom. This has caused many apricot growers to feel sad and worried about a less-than-ideal harvest.
Mr. Tran Bay's apricot blossom garden in Ham Hiep commune – owned by a man with over 15 years of experience growing apricot blossoms for Tet – shares the same scene of blooming yellow apricot blossoms as other gardens. Mr. Bay has a large plot of land, so he has three gardens with hundreds of apricot trees.
Reassuring visitors to his garden, Mr. Bay said that even though the apricot blossoms were blooming, it was still okay; there were still beautiful apricot blossoms that bloomed on the right day for people to enjoy during Tet.
Mr. Bay also affirmed that he only sells high-quality apricot blossom trees. Any trees that don't meet the standards will be nurtured by the farmers and sold the following year.
Regarding the reason for the early blooming of apricot blossoms, Mr. Bay attributed it to the erratic weather: "Previously, the weather had four distinct seasons, but now, the rain and sunshine are unpredictable. It should be cold at this time, but it's very hot. When it's hot and then rains, the apricot blossoms are stimulated to bud and bloom early."
In previous years, when the weather was favorable, around the 15th day of the 12th lunar month, apricot blossom growers would prune the leaves and add fertilizer. Around the 23rd-25th day of the 12th lunar month, the apricot blossom trees would begin to bud, and they would bloom around the 29th-30th day of the Lunar New Year.
Yellow apricot blossoms symbolize wealth and prosperity, so apricot blossoms blooming at the beginning of the year are considered lucky and auspicious; every family wants to choose a beautiful apricot blossom tree for Tet.
However, given the current situation of early blooming apricot blossoms, apricot growers must use their experience to delay the early blooming, conserve the tree's strength, and care for it so that it produces buds at the right time.
For those who cultivate apricot blossom trees, tending their gardens all year round is simply a way to look forward to Tet, hoping for good sales so they can have enough money to celebrate the holiday fully.
