The workshop "Promoting the role of intellectuals and artists to meet the requirements of rapid and sustainable development of Ho Chi Minh City in the new era" took place on the morning of August 29 in Ho Chi Minh City. The workshop was organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee and the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the City Party Committee.

Intellectuals and artists are 'priceless assets of society'

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Duong Anh Duc, Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, commented: "In the process of building and developing the country in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular, intellectuals and artists always play a core role and are invaluable assets of society."

Mr. Duc said that Ho Chi Minh City possesses a large, talented and dedicated team of intellectuals and artists. However, the context of deep international integration poses many new requirements, revealing challenges that need to be thoroughly recognized and resolved.

In her introductory report, Ms. Dinh Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, said that the workshop had 92 presentations from scientists, managers, cultural experts, intellectuals, artists... to summarize and propose the development of mechanisms and policies.

Speaking at the conference, Ms. Nguyen Thi My Liem - Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association - said that the association only combines members with university degrees in music, but has broken the rule with the case of musician Nguyen Van Chung:

"He doesn't have a music university degree but has some works. With the invitation of the music association, he changed from a professional writer of market music, earning over 1 billion VND from copyright each year, to writing recent influential songs, like a new level of music in Ho Chi Minh City.

Professionally, the academic world has not completely praised your work, but it must be recognized that you have a way of speaking that many people listen to and sympathize with."

Ms. My Liem commented on Nguyen Van Chung's music: "No one writes about political topics in such a lovely and emotional way", and there are many other young artists. She questioned the role of associations in recognizing and creating conditions for artists like that.

Meritorious Artist Hanh Thuy, member of the Ho Chi Minh City Cinema Association and Theater Association, said that in recent years, music, cinema, and popular culture performances... have developed explosively, but traditional cultural industries still have many problems.

"There are three criteria I wish to be recognized for: preserving the national soul, inspiring creativity, and leading development... Recently, patriotism has grown strongly, with everyone wearing red flag shirts, painting their roofs red, spreading the spirit of nationalism," she said.

Artist Hanh Thuy believes that culture and art are things that easily penetrate into life and reach people's hearts, so the role of artists and intellectuals needs to be increasingly respected.

Concluding the conference, Mr. Duong Anh Duc cited recent concerts that attracted tens of thousands of viewers and movies that grossed hundreds of billions.

At the same time, Ho Chi Minh City still has the work of preserving culture and developing traditional art forms. In addition, the city pays close attention to international exchanges.
