On December 6, Associate Professor Tang Chi Thuong - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that with the support of end-line hospitals, many stroke victims were saved right in the Con Dao special zone, instead of having to be taken to the mainland as before.
Typically, the day before, the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center received a stroke case that arrived late, beyond the traditional golden hour.
Thanks to the presence of Dr. Chu Duc Manh, a cerebrovascular pathology specialist at People's Hospital 115, who is on rotation in Con Dao, he examined and evaluated the patient according to professional standards and performed an emergency CT scan right there.
CT images were immediately connected to People's Hospital 115 for remote consultation with Associate Professor Nguyen Huy Thang and Master Pham Nguyen Binh, Head and Deputy Head of the Department of Cerebrovascular Diseases at People's Hospital 115.
Experts unanimously diagnosed cerebral infarction after the 12th hour, but thanks to new scientific evidence expanding the treatment window, it was decided to perform intravenous thrombolysis right in Con Dao.
After only 3 hours of drug infusion, the patient spoke more clearly, could walk on his own, and his NIHSS score (international standard scale, assessing the severity of stroke - PV) improved significantly. This is the second case in Con Dao to be saved by thrombolysis under the coordination of rotating doctors and a remote consultation network with leading experts.
The Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that the recent program of rotating doctors to Con Dao has brought about many concrete results: successfully treating many serious cases that previously had to be transferred to the mainland.
At the same time, it reduces risks in emergency transportation by sea and air, improves professional practice capacity for on-site medical staff and creates strong trust among people in the city's health system.
In particular, in-depth intervention decisions based on scientific evidence, with the support of a network of experts from Ho Chi Minh City, have helped narrow the medical gap between the remote island and the inner city, bringing Con Dao closer to the goal of every citizen receiving equal and timely health care.
