The US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. |
According to USNI News , the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), along with Carrier Air Wing 2 (CVW-2), the cruiser USS Princeton (CG-59), the destroyer USS Sterett (DDG-104), and the tanker USNS Guadalupe (T-AO-200), transited the Malacca Strait on July 16. The group of ships then passed through the Singapore Strait and entered the South China Sea.
AIS detected the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer JS Asahi (DD-119) near the USS Carl Vinson strike group in the Malacca Strait; however, it is unclear whether this ship was on the same route as the US strike group. JS Asahi was returning to Japan after completing its anti-piracy mission in the Middle East.
It is currently unclear how long the Carl Vinson carrier strike group will remain in the South China Sea and whether it plans to visit any ports. The Carl Vinson departed Naval Base San Diego on November 18, 2024, to begin its Indo- Pacific deployment mission.
As of July 17th, the task force had been operational for 241 days, including three months on duty in the Middle East region under the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
