Warm and affectionate "green houses"

Not only contributing to reducing plastic waste and preserving a clean living environment, the "green houses" in the area also demonstrate profound humanistic values, turning recycled waste into a charity fund, sharing with disadvantaged women and children.

Keep the environment green

For nearly a year now, whenever she collects plastic bottles, scrap paper or cans, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu, a member of the women's association of Hoa Dong area, Dai Loc commune, brings them to the "green house" located at the intersection of the area.

She shared: “In the past, I used to put all the waste in one bag because I found the classification quite cumbersome. But since the “green house” model was launched and deployed to all cadres and women’s union members, I have fully understood the meaning of waste classification. Now, every 2-3 days, I collect and bring scrap to put in the “green house”. I am very happy that many people see and follow suit.”

The movement of classifying waste in the community and collecting recyclable waste to create a charity fund has quickly spread throughout the community.

“Previously, plastic waste and recyclable waste were often thrown on the roadside, but now people have proactively put them in this special house to protect the environment together. The landscape of the village roads and alleys is now cleaner and tidier,” said Ms. Cao Thi Hong, Head of the Women's Association of Hoa Dong area, Dai Loc commune.

The “green houses” of the Women’s Union of Hoa Dong area were filled with scrap in a short time, selling for millions of dong. With the support of benefactors, the union had additional funds to give 20 gifts, each worth 250,000 dong, to disadvantaged women in Hoa Dong area. The gifts were small but contained great sentiments, adding motivation and joy to disadvantaged women and children.

According to Ms. Duong Thi Nhu Mo, member of the Standing Committee of the Women's Union of Dai Loc commune, from the end of 2023 to now, the whole commune has built 12 "green houses" and assigned them to the women's association for management. Initially, the implementation faced many difficulties, but thanks to the persistent advocacy of exemplary cadres and members, the model has gradually become routine.

“Green houses” have also sprung up in many residential areas of Phu Thuan commune. In village cultural houses or small corners of the hamlets, it is easy to come across these meaningful works. From just a few pilot models in 2024, up to now, the whole Phu Thuan commune has 21 models and this number promises to increase, contributing to a community without plastic waste.

Little by little, spread love

Chairwoman of the Women’s Union of Phu Thuan Commune, Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao, said: “Periodically, after the “green houses” are filled with bottles, cans, cardboard, etc., the women will sort and sell the scrap together. Each time, we earn millions of dong. From that small amount of money, the association uses it to give gifts to members in need and support poor children.

From those small contributions, by July 2025, the charity fund of the Women's Union of Phu Thuan commune had exceeded 14 million VND. From this amount, the Women's Union of the commune sponsored 2 orphans, regularly supporting 600,000 VND/child every quarter; at the same time, giving hundreds of gifts including necessities to women and children in difficult circumstances in the commune.

Most recently, women in Phu Thuan commune were busy collecting scrap from the “green houses”, selling it for nearly 4 million VND. That money was used to buy 10 white ao dai sets for 10 poor female students, helping them go to school, giving them more confidence to enter the new school year 2025-2026.

With the goal of “turning recyclable waste into money”, women’s associations are constantly looking for ways to make the charity fund more and more “abundant”. Taking advantage of every occasion, from death anniversaries, weddings in the village to art performances, sports , important local events… women mobilize people to contribute cans and plastic bottles to the “green house”. These are small but very practical actions, with great meaning, contributing to keeping the environment cleaner, helping many lives to be less difficult.
