Chinese media reported on January 13th that at least 10 people were killed and six others missing after a coal mine explosion in Pingdingshan city, Henan province.

The accident occurred on the afternoon of January 12th, when 425 people were working underground. Of those, 380 have been rescued, while the rest remain safe, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Preliminary investigations indicate the accident was caused by a coal and gas explosion. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing. Authorities have detained the mine managers.
Mining activities in China have seen a high number of accidents in recent years. In 2022, 245 people died in a total of 168 mining accidents, according to official figures cited by AFP.
In December 2023, an accident occurred at a mine on the outskirts of Jixi city in Heilongjiang province, northeastern China, killing 12 people and injuring 13 others.
A month earlier, 11 people died in an accident at another coal mine in Heilongjiang province. In September of the same year, at least 16 people died in a coal mine fire in Guizhou province in southwestern China.
