The gifts from readers, along with the timely support from the local authorities, have become invaluable pillars of support, helping Mr. Thang's family overcome the most painful and difficult time. This assistance is not only material relief but also a compassionate embrace and a source of spiritual strength, giving his family renewed faith to rise again after such a major tragedy.
The pain was real, but human kindness came to the rescue.
On a chilly early winter morning in Hamlet 1, Canh Nau, Tay Phuong Commune, the air permeated every house and alleyway. But in the simple, one-story house of Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang's family, that cold seemed to vanish. Inside that humble space, warmth radiated from the handshakes, encouraging glances, and sharing embraces of the working group and neighbors near and far.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang, born in 1978, was once the strongest pillar of his family, raising six children of varying ages. Life was hard but peaceful; as long as he was healthy, he could work every day to support his wife and children. But the electrical accident on July 3, 2024, shattered everything. That day, while working at a construction site, a sudden electrical discharge from a high-voltage power line caused severe burns all over his body. The pain, the panic, and the days spent teetering on the brink of death—all became unforgettable memories for his family. After more than two months of treatment at two hospitals, despite the doctors' best efforts, he had to have one-third of both forearms amputated to save his life.

Now, he sits there on the same wooden bed where he used to rest every evening after a long day's work. But everything is different now. His arms are wrapped in white bandages, his body is gaunt, and his eyes silently gaze out at the front yard – where he used to park his old motorbike every morning before heading to work at dawn.
Beside him, his frail wife, Tran Thi Xuan, her face gaunt from worry, choked back tears as she recounted: "When the doctor said they had to amputate both of his arms to save his life, my legs trembled, and I couldn't stand. But all I could think was, as long as he's alive, we still have a home, a support for our children. Now I just hope he recovers so we can try to overcome this together… The most touching thing was the arrival of the delegation. Besides the gifts, they also brought sincere words of encouragement, giving my family more strength."
During the handover ceremony, representatives from Dan Tri Newspaper presented the family with over 164 million VND – a gift collected from the generosity of numerous readers across the country. This represents the collective effort and compassion of kind-hearted individuals, people who have never met Mr. Thang but deeply understand and sympathize with his plight. The Tay Phuong Commune People's Committee also donated an additional 5 million VND, demonstrating the timely support of the local government for the family in distress.
Nguyen Tuan Trung, Vice Chairman of the Tay Phuong Commune People's Committee, emotionally shared during the donation ceremony: "Today's support not only helps the family cover living and treatment expenses but also provides great moral encouragement. The commune will continue to stand by and support Mr. Thang's family."
Not only those present at the donation ceremony, but also the villagers understood that this family faced many hardships. Six children, all of whom were of school age—from college students to those just starting school—and especially two young grandchildren, aged 6 and 3, all depended on the meager savings the father had earned in the past.
A representative from Dan Tri Newspaper also shared emotionally: "The solidarity of our readers is proof of the compassion and humanity of the community. We hope this support will be a foundation for the family to be stronger in the journey ahead." Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang repeatedly bowed his head in gratitude. His hands were no longer whole enough to return the handshake, but his sincerity and gratitude were conveyed through his teary eyes and a forced yet incredibly warm smile.
Flames of hope will be kindled.
Six children, six pieces of love, have now become the driving force for the couple to persevere through this ordeal. But those same six children have also multiplied Ms. Xuan's worries many times over.
For the working class, the income of a construction worker like Mr. Thang is hardly enough to live comfortably. But in the past, his health allowed him to work day and night, and Mrs. Xuan only needed to take care of the housework and the children. Now, everything is turned upside down. She has to care for her bedridden husband, raise six children, and find extra work to provide food, clothing, medicine, and tuition – everything requires money. Some nights, sitting beside her husband, listening to his sighs, she can only turn away to hide her tears: "I just wish I had the strength to continue taking care of you and the children. They need to get an education; it would be a terrible sin to drop out..." The hard work and suffering of this mother moves anyone who sees her and evokes feelings of pity and sorrow.

During times of hardship and exhaustion for the family, neighbors would stop by to share vegetables, rice, a bowl of hot porridge for the sick, or words of encouragement for the children. The love and support of the community was a precious source of emotional strength, preventing the family from collapsing.

The donation ceremony concluded in a touching yet warm atmosphere. Handshakes, words of encouragement, and loving glances all instilled new energy in Mr. Thang's family. From now on, they will have better resources to cover treatment and living expenses, and more motivation for their children to continue their education.
Although many challenges lie ahead, and Thang's injuries not only affect his physical health but also impact the long-term lives of his family, the flame of hope has been rekindled...
The story of Nguyen Duc Thang's family is not just a tragedy. It is a testament to the value of compassion, sharing, and the age-old Vietnamese tradition of "helping those in need."
Over 164 million VND was donated, but what was left behind for that family was faith. Faith in kindness, in humanity, in the solidarity of the community—things that seem ordinary but have the power to lift an entire crumbling home. Today, the family's eyes are filled with hope; no matter how difficult things get, as long as they have each other and the community, they will overcome it...
