US President-elect Donald Trump

Mr. Trump has vowed to carry out the largest deportation campaign in history after taking office on January 20, 2025, according to The Guardian . However, any attempt by Mr. Trump to mobilize the military would face legal hurdles and opposition from Democratic leaders.

After winning the race to the White House, President-elect Trump quickly proposed appointing a series of hard-line figures, setting the stage for implementing a campaign to suppress immigration in his second term. Accordingly, Mr. Trump appointed Thomas D. Homan to the position of "border czar" to suppress illegal immigration.

In a short social media post announcing the position, Mr Trump said Mr Homan would be "responsible for all deportations of illegal immigrants back to their countries of origin".

In addition, Mr. Trump also appointed Mr. Stephen Miller - an anti-immigration, to take the position of Deputy White House Chief of Staff in charge of policy. In this role, Miller will participate in developing plans to deport large-scale illegal border crossers, cut the number of legal immigrants to the US as well as give him profound influence on immigration policy for Mr. Trump.

"President Trump will mobilize all necessary federal and state powers to conduct the largest deportation operation against illegal criminals, drug dealers and human traffickers in American history, while reducing costs for families," said Karoline Leavitt, who was appointed by Trump to be White House press secretary for the incoming administration.

According to analysis by Pew Research (USA), an estimated 11 million people are living illegally in the US as of 2022. Migration to the US border reached a record in 2022 - 2023 before falling sharply in 2024.
