In a conversation with tech investors in Silicon Valley, broadcast on the All-In podcast on June 20, Trump made a surprising statement regarding immigration policy.
Host Jason Calacanis raised the issue of the need for legal mechanisms in the U.S. to retain talent, a challenge currently facing the technology sector. Calacanis asked whether Trump could guarantee businesses the ability to recruit the best people from around the world to work in the U.S.
"I promise. I agree on this point, otherwise I wouldn't make this promise... You graduate from a university, I think you should automatically be granted a green card as part of your degree so you can stay in the United States," Trump responded.
Former US President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Wisconsin on June 18.
A green card, or permanent resident card, is a document that allows foreign individuals to live and work permanently in the United States. It is unclear whether Mr. Trump was referring only to those with legitimate student visas, or whether it included undocumented immigrants or those whose visas had expired.
When asked for comment, Donald Trump's campaign stated: "Only after undergoing the most rigorous vetting process in American history will the most talented graduates, who can make a tremendous contribution to America, be allowed to stay."
Which billionaire is donating the most to support Trump?
Trump's statement may be confusing because the former US president has a hardline stance on immigration. During his term, the government implemented measures to restrict American companies from employing foreign workers on H-1B visas.
When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, the Trump administration forced tens of thousands of international students to leave the US if their schools switched to online teaching. This decision was met with opposition and lawsuits from many universities, leading the government to reverse the decision.
