In a study recently published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, scientists investigated whether supplementing with vitamin D—a vitamin abundant in egg yolks—along with calcium, affects blood pressure in older adults.
Vitamin D deficiency is a common health problem leading to many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. Previous studies have shown that lower vitamin D levels are associated with higher blood pressure, suggesting that low levels of vitamin D in the body may increase the risk of hypertension.
In a new study, scientists aimed to assess the impact of vitamin D on blood pressure in older adults, particularly those who were overweight, had hypertension, and were deficient in vitamin D, according to the journal News Medical.
Vitamin D can be obtained through foods such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines; egg yolks and liver.
The study, conducted by scientists at St. Joseph University Hospital (USA) in collaboration with Rafic Hariri University Hospital and the American University Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon, included 221 participants aged 65 and older. The majority were overweight or obese, with over 80% suffering from high blood pressure.
Participants were given 1,000 mg of calcium citrate tablets daily, along with vitamin D supplementation in two doses:
The low-dose group took an additional 500 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 daily.
The high-dose group took an additional 3,750 IU of vitamin D3 per day.
Participants had their blood pressure measured at the start of the study, and 6 months and 12 months later. Their blood vitamin D levels were also measured periodically.
The results showed that vitamin D3 supplementation, combined with calcium, was effective in lowering blood pressure in older adults, especially those who were overweight. They experienced significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, according to News Medical.
However, the higher dose group showed better results, with an average decrease in systolic blood pressure of 4.2 mmHg and a decrease in diastolic blood pressure of approximately 3.02 mmHg.
The authors concluded that vitamin D supplementation—along with calcium—may help lower blood pressure in older adults with hypertension, especially those who are overweight.
These findings highlight the potential therapeutic role of combined vitamin D and calcium supplementation in controlling high blood pressure in obese older adults.

How can you apply this?
Experts recommend that overweight individuals get a blood test to determine if they are truly deficient in vitamin D. If deficient, they should consult a doctor about the appropriate dosage before taking supplements. Vitamin D can accumulate in the body and cause harm.
It's best to expose yourself to morning sunlight for 20-30 minutes to allow your body to naturally produce vitamin D, or you can obtain it through foods such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines; egg yolks and liver.
And this supplementation should be combined with a healthy diet, exercise, and weight management.
