Swiss moviegoers are flocking to the cinemas once again. According to the ProCinema film association, attendance has increased by 30% compared to the same period last year, from 6 million to 7.8 million.

“We are only about 10% away from pre-pandemic levels,” said René Gerber, the association’s secretary general, in a statement on September 29. “We hope to see a more positive development next year.”

Hollywood blockbusters continue to drive the Swiss film industry. For example, “Avatar: The Way of the Water” recorded more than one million admissions, “Barbie” recorded around 640,000 admissions and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” recorded 560,000 admissions. With a market share of 5.6% (around 419,000 admissions), Swiss films remain stable.

ProCinema is planning to expand its cinemas in the coming years. The number of cinemas in Switzerland has remained virtually unchanged since 2019, with 605 cinemas now compared to 609 four years ago. The number of empty seats is expected to decrease only slightly, from 101,739 in 2019 to 97,455 in 2023.
