Swiss film enthusiasts are once again flocking to cinemas. According to the film association ProCinema, the number of moviegoers has increased by 30% compared to the same period last year, from 6 million to 7.8 million.

In a statement released by the association on September 29, its Secretary-General, René Gerber, shared: “We are only about 10% away from pre-pandemic levels. Hopefully, things will progress more positively next year.”

Hollywood blockbusters continue to drive the Swiss film industry. For example, “Avatar: The Way of the Water” garnered over one million views, “Barbie” around 640,000, and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” 560,000. With a market share of 5.6% (approximately 419,000 views), Swiss films remain stable.

In the future, ProCinema plans to expand its cinema complexes. The number of cinemas in Switzerland has remained virtually unchanged since 2019, with 605 cinemas currently compared to 609 four years ago. The number of empty seats has only decreased slightly, from 101,739 in 2019 to 97,455 in 2023.
