The Ho Chi Minh Museum's Base Warehouse was established right after President Ho Chi Minh passed away (September 2, 1969), before the Ho Chi Minh Museum was officially established, with the function of storing and preserving on-site all documents, artifacts, images and documentary films about his life and career. This is a distinctive feature that creates special requirements in the classification, preservation and management of documents and artifacts of the Base Warehouse.

With a total area of 1,557.5 m², the Base Warehouse is built in a closed system divided into two systems: basement warehouse and roof warehouse, completely isolated, including a specialized warehouse system and functional rooms such as: Reception, sterilization, records, research - exploitation, and working area of Inventory and Preservation Department staff. Currently, nearly 170,000 artifacts are classified and preserved in warehouses according to 11 groups of materials: Paper, textiles, woodwork, metal - plastic - bone - leather, porcelain - stone - wine, works of art and films. The entire Warehouse is equipped with a synchronous equipment system, ensuring security and safety such as: Fire prevention, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting meeting standards.

Over the past 55 years, generations of staff of the Inventory and Preservation Department have always been persistent and dedicated to their quiet but responsible work: from monitoring the preservation of each artifact, completing scientific records, verifying and supplementing information on artifacts to researching and applying optimal preservation methods. Thanks to their perseverance and strict adherence to museological principles, all documents, artifacts, and films stored at the Base Warehouse are managed, processed, and preserved scientifically, ensuring absolute safety.

In addition, the Department has applied scientific and technological achievements to the work of inventorying, preserving, managing and serving the exploitation of documents and artifacts at the Warehouse such as: Digitizing documents and artifacts, building software to manage artifacts, applying modern preservation methods, etc. Thereby making the Basic Warehouse a solid foundation for all activities of the Museum in recent years and in the digital age.

Featured Activities

According to Museology, the scientific value of a museum is first and foremost determined by the quantity and quality of artifacts, in which the original document and artifact collections are the "soul", creating sustainable vitality for that museum. Therefore, over the years, the Inventory and Preservation Department has researched and built many typical document and artifact collections from large blocks of documents and artifacts such as: Collection of President Ho Chi Minh's Manuscripts, Good People and Good Deeds Newspaper, Books that President Ho Chi Minh read and left his handwriting, Photos of President Ho Chi Minh's activities, Artifacts that are President Ho Chi Minh's daily necessities, Gifts from people in the country and the world to President Ho Chi Minh...

In particular, scientific verification through recent basic and ministerial-level scientific research projects has contributed to completing the documentation of artifacts, clarifying many previously unresolved historical details, and providing important data for research on Ho Chi Minh's ideology, ethics, and style, as well as the history of the Party, Vietnamese history, and world revolution.

A number of ministerial-level scientific projects have been carried out by the Ho Chi Minh Museum based on research on document and artifact collections such as: Research and systematization of documents on Nguyen Ai Quoc's activities in the Soviet Union, 1923-1938 (2005-2006 period); Research and documentation of documents and artifacts about President Ho Chi Minh in museums and memorial sites of the Ho Chi Minh Museum System (2009-2010 period); Documentation of the collection of documents and artifacts donated to President Ho Chi Minh by individuals and organizations inside and outside the country, currently housed at the Ho Chi Minh Museum (2016-2017); Research and documentation of the collection of foreign postage stamps sent to President Ho Chi Minh (2022-2023); Research and documentation of the collection of film negatives about President Ho Chi Minh and his involvement in culture, arts, and sports at the Ho Chi Minh Museum (2024-2025),...

The Council self-assessed the ministerial-level topic: "Research on documenting the collection of negative films about President Ho Chi Minh with culture, arts and sports at the Ho Chi Minh Museum", October 27, 2025. Photo: BTHCM
