Meaningful activities
To form these two bookcases, the Provincial Library gave each village 300 copies of books with a full range of genres on economics, politics , culture, society, Vietnam's sea and island sovereignty, new rural construction..., worth nearly 10 million VND.
Books are teachers, friends, creative products of human intelligence and soul and a treasure trove of human knowledge. Reading books not only improves knowledge, skills, developseducational thinking but also trains human personality. Therefore, building bookcases in residential areas, especially in areas with many difficulties and coastal areas is an extremely meaningful activity.
Ms. Vo Thi Thanh Thao, a resident of Hoa My village, shared: “Reading is a useful activity. Therefore, we, the coastal people, are very happy to have a bookshelf with many genres like this in our locality. We will encourage our children to come read books here to broaden their knowledge and contribute to spreading the reading culture.”
According to the representative of the Provincial Library, guiding children to the bookshelf is to help them discover a new world , to escape from the virtual world in cyberspace with many temptations and risks. This is also gradually becoming one of the criteria that parents focus on in guiding their children to a healthy lifestyle. At school age, forming the habit of reading books and making friends with books will help children develop better in terms of understanding, life experience, behavior, sharing with others, and cultivating the ability to express themselves in spoken and written language.
Pham Tran Nha Uyen, a 6th grade student at Vo Nguyen Giap Secondary and High School (Xuan Canh Commune), came to the bookshelf on the opening day and confided: “I really like reading books. From reading books, I find a lot of useful information and knowledge, serving my studies, as well as good and meaningful stories about good people and good deeds. In particular, I like to read the book Stories about Uncle Ho the most. Therefore, when the bookshelf is available, I will come here to read during my break time.”
Developing a reading culture
According to Mr. Ly Van Loi, Vice Chairman of Xuan Canh Commune People's Committee, the establishment of the bookshelf contributes to promoting the reading culture of the people as well as fostering the spirit of learning among the youth in the area, creating space, inspiring and instilling reading habits for many people. "This is a place where anyone who loves, wants to read and learn from books can come to read. I hope the bookshelf will help people get acquainted with and develop the habit of reading, especially for students," said Mr. Loi.
Ms. Vo Thi Nguyen Hue, Deputy Director of the Provincial Library, said that the establishment of bookcases in residential areas aims to promote the existing resources and potential of the Provincial Library to develop programs and organize educational activities; promote propaganda activities, circulation, and book services, bringing the light of knowledge to people, especially students in areas with difficult material and spiritual conditions. This also maintains and develops a reading culture, serving the lifelong learning needs of each individual, contributing to raising awareness of self-study, self-training, improving the quality and effectiveness of education.
“With that meaning, the Provincial Library will continue to organize book donations for localities with many difficulties to improve the level of enjoyment of spiritual culture, create conditions for people to access and enjoy many good and beautiful books, contributing to fostering reading culture and reading skills for everyone. Thereby contributing to the completion of the Provincial People's Committee's plan on implementing the projects "Building a learning society in the period of 2021-2030", "Developing reading culture in the community in the period of 2022-2025, towards 2030" and the program "Promoting lifelong learning movement in families, clans, communities, units in the period of 2021-2030" in the province. At the same time, implementing the plan of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on implementing the model "Agencies, units, organizations help disadvantaged communes and cadres, party members, civil servants, and public employees help poor households" and the plan of the Provincial Library Regarding support for building reading spots and newspapers in Xuan Canh commune...", Ms. Hue added.
