When she was one year old, Le Thi Dieu Anh (Cam Le ward) had a high fever, which left her with a paralyzed leg. At the age of 15, her chance came when a non- governmental organization taught her embroidery, and from then on she began to be independent.
In 2005, she joined the City Association of Disabled Youth and thanks to the community's support, she was given a sewing machine to receive orders for processing at home with an income of about 3.5 million VND/month.
Currently, she has a family with two small children. Her husband works as a porter, with an unstable income, so family life is quite difficult. Not giving up, she researched and learned how to make yogurt to sell and received support from many people.
However, her family does not have a freezer, so she does not dare to make a large quantity because it is easy to spoil. “My family is poor, and the sewing job is not enough to take care of my children. I also make yogurt, but there is no freezer, so I do not dare to make a lot. I hope to receive support to have more income to support my children's education,” said Dieu Anh.
Through research, there are many other disabled youth in the area who are also trying to make a living every day. For example, Ms. Le Thi Bich Hien (Thanh Khe ward), who has a disability in her legs, has difficulty moving. Every day, she sells lottery tickets to support her husband who has epilepsy and her child who is in high school.
The income from the job is about 100,000 VND/day and depends on the kindness of customers. “If I had a wheelchair, I could go further to sell and earn more to take care of my family. If I sit in one place, the income is not worth much,” Ms. Hien confided.
Nguyen Huu Minh (An Khe ward) was born paralyzed in both legs, but he has never given up his desire to rise up. He studies information technology and currently edits images on computers with an income of 2.5 million VND/month. Minh expressed his desire to be supported with a wheelchair to facilitate his daily movements.
Mr. Do Hong Quang, Head of the City Disabled Youth Association, said that the association currently has 51 members, most of whom are in difficult circumstances, still have the ability to work, a desire for independence, and a desire to rise up.
However, to make their dreams come true, the association needs the support of the community. In the immediate future, the association needs to support 1 freezer and about 10 wheelchairs for members who have difficulty moving and making a living.
“We look forward to receiving the attention and cooperation of the community, philanthropists, agencies and units to support young people with disabilities. This support not only solves immediate difficulties, but also gives them the opportunity to rise up and affirm their own value,” Quang shared.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ba Duan, Deputy Secretary of the City Youth Union, Chairman of the City Youth Union, among the young people participating in the Disabled Youth Association, many have aspirations to rise up, want to be independent and contribute but are limited by circumstances and conditions.
They need practical support such as transportation, business capital, and livelihood to be able to develop their abilities. Every help, no matter how small, is a part of the motivation for them to overcome difficulties and contribute to the city's social security work.
