According to Reuters, on December 2, Samsung Electronics officially introduced its first tri-fold smartphone model called Galaxy Z TriFold, in an effort to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive foldable phone segment, especially when Chinese competitors are constantly chasing and increasing pressure on the global market.

Nearly 10-inch screen, 25% larger area

The launch of the Galaxy Z TriFold shows Samsung's ambition to continue leading foldable screen technology, in the context that foldable devices are still a small segment but are considered the "future front" in the smartphone industry.

However, analysts say the high price tag and challenges in mass production could keep the product line in the high-end device segment, reserved for a small number of users with specific needs.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is listed by Samsung at a price of about 3.59 million won, equivalent to 71-72 million VND. When fully opened, the device has a screen as large as 253.1mm (approximately 10 inches), using three separate panels, for an experience close to a mini tablet. This display area is nearly 25% larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 - the company's latest foldable phone model.

Mr. Alex Lim, Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing in Korea of ​​Samsung Electronics, commented that the foldable phone market still has a lot of room for growth.

According to him, the Galaxy Z TriFold could become a "catalyst" to promote the development of this segment in the coming years. However, he also frankly said that this is not a product aimed at mass sales, but mainly for a group of customers who really need to use a large-screen, multi-functional and high-tech experimental device.

Samsung has not launched globally, limited to a few markets

The tri-fold phone will officially go on sale domestically from December 12. After that, Samsung plans to bring the product to the markets of China, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this year. In the US, the device may be distributed from the first quarter of next year, depending on the market situation and supply capacity.

Not only does it stand out with its all-new tri-fold design, the Galaxy Z TriFold also has three batteries with a combined capacity of 5,600mAh - the largest among Samsung's current flagship models. The device supports 45W charging, allowing it to reach about 50% battery capacity in just 30 minutes. However, according to Samsung, the cost of memory and key components has been increasing sharply recently, making determining the selling price an extremely difficult decision.

Analysts say the Galaxy Z TriFold is more of a technology showcase than a product with a big sales target at the moment. Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, said this is the first generation of the trifold design to be commercialized, so it is difficult to expect high production in the early stages.

He also pointed out that although the Galaxy Z Fold series has gone through seven generations and is increasingly perfected, helping to gradually optimize production costs, with a more complex folding structure, the Galaxy Z TriFold may still face problems related to durability, stability and perfection during long-term use. Therefore, the market response in the initial launch phase will play a very important role in Samsung's next strategy.
