La Da currently has more than 1,500 hectares of durian, mainly grown in the villages of Da Tro, La Day, Da Kim, Daguri and village 4. Durian is considered a crop that brings in income many times higher than other traditional crops in the region. The climate in the villages of La Da is different, the villages of Da Tro, La Day, Da Kim are affected by the climate of the Lang Biang - Da Lat plateau, so the average temperature is lower than the villages of Daguri to village 1 by 4 - 6 degrees Celsius.
Therefore, durian in La Da has different harvest times. In villages 4 and Daguri, there are nearly 300 hectares of durian that usually ripen in June, while in villages Da Tro, La Day, and Da Kim, there are more than 1,200 hectares that are harvested later, from the end of July through September.
Due to different harvest times, the selling price of durian in La Da commune is also different. Sometimes, in the lower areas of village 1 and Daguri, the harvest is at a time when many other places are harvesting en masse, causing the price of durian to be low. Sometimes, companies need large quantities for export, so they buy at high prices, and people "hit the jackpot".
On the contrary, sometimes the Da Tro, La Day, Da Kim regions harvest later than other regions, when durian is scarce and the price is high. However, if the rainy weather lasts for a long time like this year, the Da Tro, La Day, Da Kim regions are more at risk of quality problems.
Mr. Phan Dung has more than 8 hectares of durian in Da Tro village, shared: In Da Tro, La Day, Da Kim areas, most durian growers harvest 2-3 times. The first time is from mid to late July, the second time is in early August and the third time is in mid-September. Usually, the first two times are the main season because of the yield, quality and price, while the third time is the salvage time because the yield is lower than the first two times, and the price is unstable because the fruit is often hard due to the peak of the rainy season.
The characteristics of durian when it is old and about to ripen depend a lot on the weather. In hot weather, growers still water the trees to cool them down, but if it rains for a long time, the durian will have hard flesh, pale flesh, uneven ripening, and no aroma...
Ms. Hong Nguyet, a durian buyer in La Da commune to supply to export establishments, said: Durian with unripe flesh is very difficult to buy because it is impossible to quantify the percentage of unripe fruit. If the unripe portion is less than 20%, it is still collected to sell to ice cream and food processing units, but if the unripe portion is over 40%, no one will buy it for fear of loss. The price of unripe Ri6 durian in La Da is currently very cheap, only about 15,000 - 17,000 VND/kg, while ripe durian still maintains the price from 40,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, depending on the type.
Although the price of unripe durian is low, reducing revenue, most durian growers in Da Tro, La Day, and Da Kim villages are "not too worried" because they have already harvested the first crop or some households have harvested two crops with high revenue, so in summary, this year's durian growers still have high profits.
Thanks to the stable income from durian, in La Da, many households have invested in advanced farming methods such as: organic farming, using automatic drip irrigation systems, like some models appearing in Da Tro, La Day and Daguri villages... combining durian production with eco -tourism . Durian gardens are open for tourists to visit, experience and enjoy the fruits in the garden, not only bringing in additional income but also contributing to promoting the local durian brand...
