Will repetitive workers be replaced?

At the workshop "AI - the times or the times", organized by Hanoi University within the framework of the 2024 job fair, Mr. Le Minh Duc, Director of the Institute for Financial Management and Educational Technology Research, said that AI has opened up many opportunities, helping many fields become more modern, but a large number of human resources will be unemployed.

According to Mr. Duc, the global AI market is expected to continue to grow strongly in the coming years. It is estimated that AI could contribute up to 15,700 billion USD to the global economy by 2030.

Industries impacted by AI include: Customer service; media and content creation; finance and manufacturing.

"About 70% of business leaders predict that artificial intelligence will help businesses optimize production processes, provide services, increase efficiency, and reduce costs.

In particular, AI allows businesses to provide highly personalized products and services to customers," said Mr. Duc.

Mr. Duc predicts that personnel in charge of repetitive tasks are likely to be replaced in the future, and many workers are worried that AI will replace their jobs.

In response to a specific question from Vietnamese students about AI's replacement in employment, at a recent talk, Professor Sunil Gupta (Head of the Artificial Intelligence, Optimization and Materials Discovery Group, A2I2 Institute, Deakin University) said that AI helps people's lives become more convenient, upgrading their lives to a higher standard by reducing manual operations.

A large number of jobs have been and will continue to be replaced by AI, but along with that, a large number of corresponding jobs will be created, requiring high-quality human resources, truly good human resources to perform.

Don't sit around waiting

However, according to Professor Sunil Gupta, AI only screens, not fires or takes away people's jobs. AI will threaten the jobs of those who do not upgrade themselves, but AI cannot make people unemployed or lose their jobs.

With this perspective, Mr. Le Minh Duc affirmed that human resources cannot sit still and wait, but must choose fields of study to control AI to suit the times.

Sharing with Dan Tri reporters, some students said that in the 4.0 era, when AI is increasingly replacing jobs, they must be proactive and learn on their own to find more skills that are suitable for reality.

A student of the English Language Department (Hanoi University) said that since the first years of university, he actively participated in clubs to gain more soft skills in teamwork. He also tried to teach outside to gain more experience.

"At school, teachers provide many soft skills and practice opportunities, but we need to go out to find more opportunities and accumulate more work experience," the female student said.

Doan Thanh Thao, a fourth-year student majoring in corporate communications at Hanoi University, said that studying at school mainly provides basic knowledge, but to gain more experience in the 4.0 era, the best way is to get early exposure to the market through businesses," Thao said.

According to Thanh Thao, from her first and second year, she had to work part-time, but mainly manual work, serving at coffee shops, to earn extra income.

In years 3-4, I spent a lot of time working outside related to specialized work. The income may not be as high as before, but that job helps me gain a lot of work experience for the future.

Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice Principal of Hanoi University, said that to keep up with the trend and help students not fall behind, a number of businesses are currently working with the school to design suitable training programs.

On average, every 2 years, the school revises the training program to suit the times, increasing practical internship activities for students according to career orientation.

"Every time we launch a new program, we consult with businesses to make adjustments to suit reality," said Dr. Dung.
