Summary of the Project on protection and development of coastal forests

At the workshop to review the implementation of the Project "Protection and development of forests (FPD) in coastal areas, to respond to climate change and promote green growth in the period 2021 - 2030" held yesterday (December 8) in Ca Mau, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, reports from 21 coastal provinces and cities showed that in the period 2021 - 2025, the work of FPD in coastal areas achieved many positive results.

Over the past 5 years, coastal localities have protected more than 281,000 hectares of forest, exceeding the plan set out in the Project. At the same time, the total forestation area reached more than 11,600 hectares, including about 7,700 hectares of mangrove forests and more than 4,100 hectares of wind and sand protection forests.

The area of newly planted forests reached over 6,400 hectares; the area of additional planting, restoration and forest enrichment reached over 5,100 hectares. In addition, localities also enclosed and promoted regeneration of nearly 8,000 hectares of forest and planted about 329 million scattered trees along the coast.

Many localities have achieved high results in coastal forest planting such as: Ca Mau , Quang Ninh, Hue, Hai Phong, Vinh Long. Ca Mau alone planted nearly 1,880 hectares of coastal forest, the locality with the largest planting area among the reported provinces and cities.

Despite the positive results, some localities have yet to implement new planting or coastal forest restoration. Some provinces have achieved low results due to lack of land, harsh natural conditions and limited resources.

Along with afforestation, many localities have invested in building projects to support coastal protection and development such as repairing dikes and embankments; building soft embankments to prevent waves, retain mud to create afforestation areas; station houses, traffic roads combined with patrolling and forest protection.

In the 2021-2025 period, coastal provinces have implemented 147 B&D projects with a total investment of more than VND 2,600 billion. Capital is mobilized from the central budget, local budget, ODA capital and other socialized sources.

According to the assessment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, coastal provinces and cities are annually greatly affected by storms, tropical depressions, high tides and monsoon winds. Climate change and rising sea levels have been causing coastal and estuary erosion, land loss, and deforestation, directly affecting coastal ecosystems and the effectiveness of afforestation.

Land for coastal afforestation is increasingly narrowing, mainly in small, fragmented plots. Some places have to apply technical solutions to create new land for afforestation, leading to high costs. In particular, mangrove afforestation is strongly affected by waves, wind, harmful organisms, environmental pollution and coastal waste, making it difficult to plant, care for and protect the forest.
